DU Hams, MARS, CAP, CB .... check in.
How many do we have, in case of emergency? What would be a good emergency frequency common to all of the above? I suggest a 10/11-meter freq and a 20-meter freq (and maybe a 80-meter freq for nights) for SSB communications.

1. Good idea, Mac
Wish I had a radio. Thinkin pigeons might not be a bad thing as back up too.

Old shortwave in the basement. Should I dust it off and pop in some batteries just in case the internet goes dark and I need news? I live REALLY far off the beaten path.

If you ham operators go into action, will there be any way for short wave stations to get your news and broadcast to us peons?

I am wave challenged.

3. Dust it off, HM.
I'll always be on the easy-to-remember 20-meter freq of 14.28 mHz. I have a dipole cut to that exact frequency, and I can easily do 1-KW power on that frequency.

2. Good idea
I'm going for my Basic Canadian ticket soon.

What about IRLP? Provided there are enough repeaters and the Internet links stay intact, it could be a great resource.

Other than that, low-power systems such as PSK31 that are resistant to interference would be a good choice, too.

5. I was thinking about an internet down.
PSK-31 is fantastic. I regularly work Japan, New Zealand, and Australia on 10 meters/5-watts PSK-31! Download the programs now and be totally independent of the internet.

7. Renew now.
Get the gear in shape. The two meter band is very important during local emergencies. Six is less important, but cultivate it.

6. That's actually a good idea, Mac.
20 or 40M would probably be the best choices. I don't have a current ticket or any gear, though.
If things get real weird I wouldn't even worry about the license...I really should get my old call
K5ETH back, it never got reassigned. A rig is easy to latch onto. Dammit, I knew I should've kept
my 75A4 and KWS1. ;-)

No tower here but I could throw up a decent enough dipole in an hour...

8. No tower here either .. yet!
Renew or standby as a pirate. Either works for me when the shit hits the fan. If I ever have to go pirate, I'll do about 10KW with a bootleg Svetlana tube grounded-grid amplifier.

10. What's that rig? Is it a Kenwood?
It looks a bit familiar but the center part with the spectrum analyzer display baffles me...?
..

Oh wait, it's a Icom! I finally managed to read some of the text below the S meter. Can't make out the model number though...

12. Keep it kicked. We need more info about broadcast frequencies
for all you guys. I agree with Mac's pro-active stance. The net is what is bringing the junta down, after corporations spent all that money on pols to deregulate media ownership and then all that money on buying the media. The people would not know how bad the junta is were it not for the Internet and the junta now understands the threat of free exchange of information on this medium.

There will be attempts to shut it down, bet ya dollars to donuts. When cheney refuses to turn over the reins, there will be disarray in the extreme. We will need ways to get information across vast distances and you HAM operators may well be the only way to do it.

So many people will rely on you folks. I know I will. Without some way to know what is going on in other places, we would be COMPLETELY vulnerable and lost in many parts of the nation. The west coast and east coast, for all their sophistication, culture and massive populations, would be just as isolated as I am up here on the plains of eastern Montana.

Keep it kicked. Post link to this in other threads to get the word out to hams. We need a resource that those of us without transmitters, but with receivers, can print out and stash away.

And we need batteries if we don't have generators.

Thanks Mac. :patriot:

Hey, if you guys are not comfy posting your signals here, at least PM some of us with them so we can come up with a decent web of frequencies to monitor when the excrement hits the ventilating device.

And please keep it kicked. Don't let the important stuff drown in all the flashy diversions. That would be letting the junta win another battle. Time for us to rack up some wins.

Mac: pats to that pup from hm ;)

31. But, but, but havocmom, don't you know that the SS and the FBI
are our FRIENDS?? I know it from reading the messages of many of the posters on the Secret Service thread. It's a GOOD thing that the SS and FBI aggressively investigate websites like DU and people with anti-Bush t-shirts, anti-Bush posters in their apartments, and anti-Bush artwork. Investigating dissenters is not in ANY way intended to have a chilling effect on free speech or free expression.

(it's a fokkin' shame that I think I probably need to attach the :sarcasm: icon for the benefit of other DEers.
ACKKKKK. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: )

Oh, and BTW, The Progressive is all wrong when they print articles like "The New McCarthyism" on their website http://progressive.org/newmccarthyism and when they have a "McCarthyism Watch" section on their website that is 20 pages long http://progressive.org/mccarthy

Wait, wait - I forgot the Dept. of Homeland Security. They're our friends too, because they also investigate dangerous dissenters, and their artwork, and t-shirts, etc.

All these agencies keeping us safe. It's a great day in 'Murka.

29. KD2MX here
I'm active on all bands 160M-432Mhz depending upon propagation, etc. Basically a QRP enthusiast so I work mostly CW. Have a FT897 and KX1, both field-ready.

I've dabbled with PSK but have to get more into it. It's also ideal for QRP ops.

There is no one band that is good as a meeting place. 10M just isn't open enough. Probably a combo of 80/40&20M DU calling frequencies.
