If the TV ad by the RNC wasn't enough to convince you, listen to this campaign ad HIS OWN CAMPAIGN PUBLISHED! http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/images/2006-10-25_Corker_Radio_Ad.mp3You can read a discussion of the ad on TPM here: http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2006/oct/25/tn_sen_corker_radio_ad_has_tom_tom_drums_during_mentions_of_fordThe people of TN obviously get the point of the ad and it is a blatant disgusting display of racism. RNC = Racist Neocon Criminals

1. Well, I don't think HE is, but I'm pretty sure he's trying to appeal |
|
to some white male Deliverance types who just happen to be registered to vote around here.
Awful.
I just hope that women and minorities get particularly riled about this crap and get out the vote.
I'm going to email this to the Rev. Harold Middlebrook. If the wingnuts can go on and on about politics in their churches, then the right reverend Middlebrook - a BIGTIME influence on black voters in Tennessee - can certainly sway some folks, sans pulpit.

I never perceived him as such when he was mayor of Chattanooga, but now that he's cahoots with the national party, he's turned into a right putz. I'm not sure he's a racist, but he is a rubberstamping putz.

3. Those drums were the signal for the that certain segment of the |

racist population to let them know that Ford is a black guy in case they were not paying attention.

4. The ads are, in any case. It would NOT be good if it were learned that |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 04:06 PM by Old Crusoe
Corker was behind the ads.
I'll just say that if Corker were worth electing to the U.S. Senate, he would publicly demand that the ad be taken off the air, and would have done so in stronger terms than he did, much earlier than he did, and would threaten to drop his affiliation with the Republican Party if the ad did not instantly disappear.
Corker's protest was perfunctory.
And that's why I'm suspicious.

Kind of pathetic, really.
I think Ford will be a fine senator.

Please visit www.hamdems.org and scroll down to the headline Bob's Been Busted! He stated that it was illegal for him or his campaign to contact the RNC, but he has a staffer from the RNC, Camille Anderson, traveling around with him. I'm sure they never discuss anything, right?

to see if I heard anything that would seem "racist" to me. IMHO, they're really reaching on this one as convincing evidence of overt racism.

11. I agree. The drums are WAY down in the mix - the music is more overt |
|
Not racist, but in a minor key - 'danger' music.

Totally "Harold Ford has kidnapped Little Jimmy Dickens and strapped C4 to the Grand Ole Opry's load-bearing support beams" music.

but after listening to the ad, I have to think it's intentional and the complaints are justified. I can't put any other interpretation on it.

15. Here's how I though of it... |
|
Watch most action and drama movies, when the bad guy comes on, or something bad is happening, they usually seem to play low tones (base guitar, large drums, the low end of the piano). The music was IMHO, probably chosen to make Ford out to be a bad guy, but I didn't see (or hear) the racism in it.

16. I hear an homage to African war drums at the beginning... |
|
I also hear the "Bob Corker is NOT a Professional Politician" message that's supposed to appeal to Joe and Jane Voter.
Which, even if I didn't know Corker was a fucking Publican, would be enough to turn me off the SOB.
I WANT a professional politician doing my politicking for me. I want someone who knows how to kiss hands and shake babies. I want someone who can negotiate, who can compromise when needed and stand his ground when required.
Politics is a business like any other. You want someone who knows what the hell he's doing, doing it.
Keep your "not a professional politician," G.O.Pee.

18. I agree with most of this... |
|
Corker's not a professional politician, he's an a-hole, and I hope he loses big time, but that doesn't make this an overtly racist ad. If you didn't know that Ford was black, would you have immediately recognized these as African war drums? If Ford was American Indian instead, would you have thought "Why are they playing African war drums", or though that those were Native American war drums? If Ford was caucasian, would you have wondered what the hell the drums were all about?
I don't follow Corker, and I have no idea if he's a racist or not, but if this is being cited as proof, IMHO, it's pretty weak.

I don't think the ad's racist, although some people do. It's the "my opponent is a POLITICIAN" bullshit that gets to me.
On edit: If you didn't know what race Ford is--not likely considering senatorial candidates are on television frequently--and you didn't know world beats, you probably wouldn't know why there were drums in the ad.
Umm...you're running for a national-level political office, dipshit. What does this make you?

20. About noticing the drums |
|
being a drummer, I'm sure you usually notice the drums first when you listen to music. My point about it was that if someone wasn't looking for a racial component, they probably wouldn't have even noticed the drums in the commercial at all. If you played the commercial for an unsuspecting person, and then asked them which instruments were used in the music, they would probably have to guess.
I don't like the commercial at all, but I definitely don't see "overt racism" in it either. I think the claims being made about this are a little over the top, done in hopes of generating a little extra support for Ford, or at least against Corker.
