How 'Bout a Big Round of Applause for
:woohoo: DU'ers CorpGovActivist...and IdesofOctober!!! :woohoo:

Thanks to them (and others, of course) I'm seeing 100s!! and I mean HUNDREDS!! of articles around the world about Halliburton's subsidiary KRB's abuse of federal rules.

NY TIMES: Report Says Iraq Contractor Is Hiding Data From U.S.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/28/world/middleeast/28reconstruct.html

<snip>

The oversight agency, the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, said KBR had refused to disclose information as basic as how many people are fed each day in its dining facilities and how many gallons of fuel are delivered to foreign embassies in Iraq, claiming that the data was proprietary, meaning it would unfairly help its business competitors.

<snip>

Henry A. Waxman, the California Democrat who is the ranking minority member of the House Committee on Government Reform and was one of the earliest critics of KBR’s use of the proprietary label, said the new memo showed how the company had tried to conceal “corporate profiteering during wartime.”

11. It all started, I believe
when CorpGovActivist (aka David Smith) was working for Halliburton. One day, he accidentally received some very interesting e-mails. They were intended for a different David Smith who worked for Halliburton and concerned problems w/ hiding $ from the gov't that the company paid out in Nigeria.

Check out his journal. (see OP)

Both CorpGovActivist and IdesofOctober sound very positive about what they're working on and say they have lots of support.

14. What I'm Wondering Is Was It That Email That Started The Articles?
Was it because of his receiving that email that the rest of what's being investigated was discovered? I don't see any mention of him or the email in the stories you referenced, so I'm wondering how they are related? The stories seem to have nothing to do with anything anyone on DU did, so that's why I'm asking for what I'm missing.

Would these 100's of stories on google not have existed on their own without the DU'ers mentioned? If they wouldn't have, what is it that those DU'ers did that contributed to those stories existence? How come they aren't being given credit for cracking this issue?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2498181&mesg_id=2498181

CorpGovActivist:
<snip>
As early as late March and early April of this year, I was spending much of my time up on Capitol Hill, sharing information with lawmakers and their staffs about my time at Halliburton. At some point, I will be at liberty to share the e-mails and other communications we exchanged.

<snip>

I expect to see major news stories break about these investigations next week. The work began months and years ago; some lawmakers on Capitol Hill created a safe haven for whistleblowers to come forward. Their stories will be heard - and Cathy Mann, Halliburton's spin doctor, should just resign now.

<snip>

30. Ways to help
from CorpGovActivist's site: http://www.halwhistleblowers.org/

Some Concrete Steps You Can Take to Help:

1. Contact your Member of Congress and your Senators, regardless of their party affiliation. Urge them to speak out in favor of oversight hearings.

2. Contact your favorite local or national media outlet. Urge them to investigate.

3. Educate yourself about the issues. Besides this site, there are several places you can go for more information. These include:

Halliburton Watch http://HalliburtonWatch.org

The Project on Government Oversight http://www.pogo.org

The Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) http://www.sigir.mil/

4. Monitor Halliburton's SEC filings, as well as the filings being made by KBR. If you're already a Halliburton stockholder, call up Investor Relations and demand to be treated like an owner. Be polite, but insist on answers. If you're not already a Halliburton stockholder, a single share of stock suffices to ensure that you receive important notices, so that you can keep abreast of the goings-on.

5. Donate generously of your time, your talents, and - if you're able - of your money to the groups that are standing up to the current executive management structure at Halliburton. If you wish to donate your time, expertise, or money to this site's operations, please contact the Editor, Mr. David A. Smith, at editor@halwhistleblowers.org.

"Was it because of his receiving that email that the rest of what's being investigated was discovered? I don't see any mention of him or the email in the stories you referenced, so I'm wondering how they are related? The stories seem to have nothing to do with anything anyone on DU did, so that's why I'm asking for what I'm missing."

Imagine you're a Federal prosecutor, or a minority staff attorney, or a minority ranking member of a key investigative committee.

One or more whistleblowers start quietly bringing you "inside" documents, showing what to look for. Pretty helpful, right?

That's what ***MANY*** Halliburton/KBR whistleblowers have done, operating from within the beast.

I worked in the Federal Proposals Group of Halliburton/KBR's Federal Practice. While there, I worked on the proposal responses on such key projects as: LOGCAP III, RIO II, Afghan Embassy rebuild, DTRA CTRIC task order responses, etc.

"Would these 100's of stories on google not have existed on their own without the DU'ers mentioned? If they wouldn't have, what is it that those DU'ers did that contributed to those stories existence? How come they aren't being given credit for cracking this issue?"

The FARS (and DFARS), are supposed to govern how Federal contracts are awarded:

Again, I can point to specific violations. So can many others.

If you're ever in Cambridge, MA, you can see the starting point of Dawes' ride (marked by golden horseshoes in the pavement), adjacent to the Cambridge Common (where George Washington took command of the American forces): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_Common

I had a chance to take some family and friends on a tour last week, while up for the Head of the Charles. That's the fun stuff most people miss!

"I have to think of David Hackett Fischer's _Paul Revere's Ride, and his explanation of the levels of redundancy built in to the entire Revolutionary effort. Rag tag bunch of country bumpkins indeed! Ha!"

It is no accident that Dr. Joseph Warren is so prominently featured here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=joseph+warren+stained+glass+masonic+alexandria

He may have died early and tragically (at Bunker Hill), but the redundant rides he organized turned the tide of history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Warren

111. Bonfire night!
Bonfire Night, Fireworks Night and Plot Night, is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November.

The celebrations, which in the United Kingdom take place in towns and villages across the country, involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires, traditionally on which "guys", or dummies, representing Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the conspirators are burnt.

Following a severe interrogation involving the use of torture, and a trial in Westminster Hall by Judge John Popham, Fawkes and his conspirators were executed for treason and attempted murder.

25. This thread and the links on it make me think of Nov 5th
Folks,
I am sure most of you know that November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day.

Get out your DVD or rent "V IS FOR VENDETTA".

This movie surely fits the message for this link. It shows a parallel to what is really happening in the USA presently and what a comment on this thread shows Thomas Paine said.

As a retiree fraud analyst I am so engrossed in all the threads that Ides of October and GovCorpActivist have on DU this past month.

I have hope for the Republic of America. But you know that old saying "hope for the best but plan for the worst" and it will be hard to acknowledge the worst if what we all hope for does not happen. I have been disappointed so much in the past 6 years.

November 7th is the test. If we win I think of lot of repugs will be moving to Paraguay. If we lose I don't know what you all will do. I have already exited the USA but still their poison can flow my way. I'm hoping for a victory for all of us DU members. Long live Freedom and Justice for All.

27. Remember, remember, the 5th of November.....
I've been watching that movie all weekend. It's a brilliant movie and very suggestive of what's going on today.

Let's hope Novemeber 7th is the beginning of the end for "High Chancellor Bush".

Or should I say "High Chancellor Cheney" and his spokespuppet.

58. David Is a True...
... INTJ, as I mentioned in another thread. Although the description makes me laugh every time I read it, I am dead serious when I say that it suits David to a "T":

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=intj

The whole thing fits, but some parts really make me stand up and take notice, knowing David: INTJs "tend to be scrupulous and even-handed about recognizing the individual contributions that have gone into a project, and have a gift for seizing opportunities which others might not even notice."

Famous INTJs:
Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers)
Susan B. Anthony
Arthur Ashe, tennis champion
Augustus Caesar (Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus)
Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice)
William J. Bennett, "drug czar"
William F. Buckley, Jr.
Raymond Burr (Perry Mason, Ironsides)
Chevy Chase (Cornelius Crane) (Fletch)
Phil Donahue
Michael Dukakis, governor of Mass., 1988 U.S. Dem. pres. candidate
Greg Gumbel, television sportscaster
Hannibal, Carthaginian military leader
Veronica Hamel (Hill Street Blues)
Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote)
Orel Leonard Hershiser, IV
Peter Jennings
Charles Everett Koop
Ivan Lendl
C. S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia)
Joan Lunden
Edwin Moses, U.S. olympian (hurdles)
Martina Navratilova
Charles Rangel, U. S. Representative, D-N.Y.
Pernell Roberts (Bonanza)
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California
Josephine Tey (Elizabeth Mackintosh), mystery writer (Brat Farrar)
Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor
Donald Rumsfeld, US Secretary of Defense
General Colin Powell, US Secretary of State
Lance Armstrong
Richard Gere (Pretty Woman)
Katie Couric

U.S. Presidents:
Chester A. Arthur
Calvin Coolidge
***Thomas Jefferson***
***John F. Kennedy***
James K. Polk
***Woodrow Wilson***
Fictional:
Cassius (Julius Caesar)
Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
***Gandalf the Grey (J. R. R. Tolkein's Middle Earth books)***
Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs)
Professor Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes' nemesis
Ensign Ro (Star Trek--the Next Generation)
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Hamlet)
George Smiley, John le Carre's master spy
Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs)
*******************************************************

Applause for David, and for those he deems worthy to share in the credit (trust me, he'll be scrupulous about saying who had a hand in the whole thing).

Whisky, as he says, for me.

Is that the face of a troublemaker? It ain't the face of a saint, that's for sure.

People with dimples are always getting other people in trouble. Always. Never trust someone with dimples. Mischievous little imps, the dimpled ones are. Started getting away with things when they were adorable little kids and never stopped using those dimples as weapons against their opponents, as irresistable lures to entice the unsuspecting into all sorts of activities one would never think of engaging in otherwise.

Showing me your dimples as if to prove your innocence, when in fact it only adds to the weight of the evidence against you.

Troublemaker.

108. Want to see him blush bright red?
When his close friends have teased him about who he wants to play him, he invariably turns a glow-in-the-dark red, and gets completely tongue tied - growing suddenly very interested in his plate of food, or his beer.

Contenders have included (in no particular order):

1. Jake Gyllenhaal

2. Ethan Hawke

3. Heath Ledger (causing David to blush even brighter, if possible, LOL)

4. Leonardo DiCaprio (causing David to roll his eyes and get up from the table, at least once)

Ben Affleck would be a good choice, too. I'm sure they can digitize the dimples, anyway, nowadays.

"It is possible to have one or both cheeks surgically modified to create a dimple. This can cost around $500 per cheek."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimples

(Amazing what people will do to themselves, huh?)

The other thing the actor would have to have: brown eyes (very dark), twinkling full of mischief and full of compassion.

I have a personal favorite on that list, based on the actor's portrayal of another character that I think had similar growth to David's. I think that actor's mastery of that particular role would lend itself well to understanding how David has grown, and the path he took. That's a serious end to a message that is probably going to get me excommunicated.

Ides

P.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethan_Hawke (His portrayals of the protagonists in Gattaca and Dead Poets' Society would bode well for his grasp of the character here, in my opinion.)

Nobody plays a role finer than Heath. He is, IMHO, simply one of the finest actors to ever grace the silver screen.

Leonardo? I would roll my eyes and gag.

But I see a resemblance between Affleck and David, a fleeting resemblance, but it's there.

It may be a bit premature to be casting, but I am 100% in earnest when I say - someone *should* make this film; it's an incredible story.

78. I could be flip, and say,
"Ain't no thing."

But that would cheapen what David and the other whistleblowers have been through (their families, too).

Thank you.

82. You are correct,
that was flip, please accept my apologies. I do appreciate everything that has been done to save our democracy from the fascists in power. I have no doubt there was nothing easy about it.:patriot:

84. No, no, you have nothing to apologize for...
... I was tempted to answer flippantly - but then I realized that to do so would cheapen the sacrifices that the whistleblowers have made.

I'm sorry. My bad.

... David.

"Cutie pie ye are...but yer too skinny...neeps an` tatties
on yer diet..."

Aye, we all try to fatten 'im up. Eats like it's going out of style, barely gains an ounce!

That's due, in no small part, to his having Crohn's: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=crohn%27s+painful+debilitating

"Ides...a troublemaker...nay...cannae believe..."

My halo is held firmly in place by my horns.

; )

"wee bit cheeky perhaps...I see the twinkle in yer eye, laddie..."

Kindness, compassion, and fire - honest to God, and all tomfoolery aside, he's got eyes of an old soul, that David does.

"Have ye seen GunPowder, Treason & Plot wit Robert Carlyle?
Now that is an actor..."

That's one I've missed. I'll add it to the list: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377184/
