What if God should lose the war?
Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 01:58 PM by kpete
There is a particular danger with a war that God commands. What if God should lose? That is unthinkable to the evangelicals. They cannot accept the idea of second-guessing God, and he was the one who led them into war. Thus, in 2006, when two thirds of the American people told pollsters that the war in Iraq was a mistake, the third of those still standing behind it were mainly evangelicals (who make up about one third of the population). It was a faith-based certitude.

1. God, much like the nation's military, cannot lose
He can only be undermined and betrayed by the people's lack of faith and support.

2. God doesn't surrender
even if it means the destruction of all of his creations. Think of the mentality. It's the religion of the "American way of life". In the cold war the policy basically was that if the big one broke out that mutually assured destruction was preferable even to surrender. How mad is that to leave no back door for your own country. I think the whole PNAC agenda is following in this basic mold that if the US can't control all of the world's resources it will lay that world to waste at even the expense and lives of most of its own countrymen. The leaders have their underground cities already built for them. If they have to become the morlocks to rule over a devastated earth, I fear that they are all too comfortable even with that nightmare scenario. I have very low hopes for the future of mankind.

3. Well, He's already broke. Just ask the preachers.
The guy needs a good accountant. But, in the meantime, pass the basket.

4. Yeah,
I was looking at the pristine, lit by 15 street lamps, parking lot of one of our churches last night admiring how the pavement is better than 90% of the roads in our city. God aint broke.

5. Well, they're doing God's work: Raising money.
Funny how an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, deity should always need some preacher, priest, rabbi, imam, shouting that "God needs your help."

You'd think that anybody who controlled 70 trillian+ stars, "marks the sparrows" fall, wiped out the world with a flood, knocked down the walls of Jericho, and got Jonah out the whale, could handle himself pretty well.

The way the preachers present *HIM* he comes off as an incompetent boob.

7. What makes us so sure that this God exsists or is on our side?
Keep in mind the "God moves in mysterious ways" final answer to all spooky questions. In fact the loss would offer a bit of proof that Jesus really was the son of God and meant it when he predicted that that "The meek shall inherit the earth". IMO the overly greedy Republicans just shot themselves in the foot by picking Bush to over spook the World situation.

8. In my recollection of these matters
God was usually on the side of the oppressed, not the oppressors.

BTW, today's lectionary includes the Beatitudes...

Among which is:

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven".

Doesn't exactly sound to me like this was "God's War"

9. Have you spoken with God about this?

I strongly suggest that God would be a bit more than peeved that you're suggesting this is "God's War".

I'm guessing this wasn't God's idea.

I'd hope that you'd divorce the connection, in your mind, between God and Falwell, Robertson, et al.

Again, please take God's word on this, not those clowns.

13. He's been out of town
But he's back now and he's pretty ticked about the mess we've made of things during the decade or so that he's been away. We are supposed to concentrate on winning the election. For His part, He said he'd take care of those hypocritical rat bastards who have been using His name to justify all of this crap.

17. It's like the "Rapture" that we keep having every couple months.
When Reality doesn't line up with their delusions, they change the story.
