I know we have some candidates active at DU and probably more that visit. I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the sacrifices you have made in order to run for public office. With only a week remaining, I know I'm about to jump out of my skin with the stress so I cannot imagine being in your shoes.

I am conveying my gratitude now because it has nothing to do with whether you win or lose. The fact remains that you have given of your time, your privacy, and probably some of your own personal money with no guarantee of success. Whether you are running for city council, county commission or U.S. Senate, your participation in our representative democracy is the cornerstone. Without options on the ballot, everything else is moot.

I am certainly pulling for a Democratic victory next Tuesday, but my heart particularly goes out to the candidates who will be conceding as a sweep is simply not realistic. However, I am of the opinion that not a single concession speech will be uttered by losers. You already won an important victory when you displayed the courage and the will to run.
