Virus writers target web videos
Just in time for the launch of DU's new video forum :freak:

Virus writers target web videos

The growing popularity of online video has caught the attention of malicious hackers and hi-tech criminals.

Security firms are reporting more and more instances of booby-trapped Windows codecs - file compressors - required to play some video formats.

Some of the codecs let users play types of net-based video, but also have spyware and adware wrapped inside.

Others, say experts, are outright fakes that just want to infect victims with data-stealing programs.

In short, make sure you have an anti-virus application up and running at all times, and for crying out loud, make sure you have an active subscription that keeps your protection up to date!!

2. I recently got "hit"
Running Firefox, ZoneAlarm, AdAware, Counterspy, AVG antivirus, and now Trend Micro Anti-Spyware.

It was an embedded virus and I finally got rid of it in the SAFE MODE with AVG's cleaner. I think I spent at least 6 or 7 hrs. getting rid of this "generic worm". Where I got it, I have NO idea.

Maybe it was watching an on-line video? I've done this recently.

In any event, I really wish these virus writer's would find something else to do with themselves that is useful instead of destructive! :grr:

:dem: :kick:

3. And if a video needs a new codec in order to play, reconsider
whether you REALLY need to see that video.

Aside from AV software, basic PC protection includes the following:

ZoneAlarm firewall (free, and best of breed)
Ad-Aware SE Personal (free)
Spybot Search & Destroy (free)
Spyware Blaster (free)

All of these are available at C-Net's Download.com
