Attack your opponents "strength", put him on the defensive, force a dialog that is bound to be "newsworthy" (controversial) and respond quickly and forcefully to the ensuing counter attacks.
Kerry knows he won, and that a majority of the country no longer support the war in Iraq. It was Bush's final political card (terra=Iraq), but the public knows they have been lied to.
Bush obviously feels that he can still turn the elections on it.

At least I think that's what Kerry has done here. That he is responding quickly and strongly to statements from the Snow/Buschco is great, and something that Carville used extremely well to get Clinton elected.

edit: Not an endorsement of Rovian tactics in general, which tend to be based on lies and character assassination.

on edit: not Rovian in traditional way

8. Yes, you are correct.
I edited my hastily written post to address that.

3. Yes, he's on the offense and they won't win this one!
Imagine what they'd have done in the old model: CNN and FOX are all over the quote, and then the Dem puts out a mild statement of protest by an aide or staffer, and the Bushies still win the day. What Kerry did is setting a good example for all Democrats, showing them how to win the news cycle in today's 24/7 media climate. Bottom line: if you make it a big enough fight, you get a lot of coverage and your side gets heard.

4. Well, not a Rove exactly, since he told the truth, but I know what you mean
Instead of doing the usual cower-and-apologize, he came out gonads first.

I love the way he responded by attacking instead of defending. He learned something from being swift-boated, boy howdy.

9. sadly, NOT all Dems are doing this
Can't help noticing the way that the Democrat criticizing Kerry is an anonymous "top Democratic staffer," while Max Cleland puts his name on his support (and gets in a dig of his own).

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/31/kerry.mccain/index.html

I want Max Cleland to have that chickensh*t guy's job. He's the kind of person who needs to be making statements on the party's behalf, not Mr. Anonymous.

12. The news played right into his hand...
...Kerry called bush a dumbass and they reported it on the news! Of course, he's said it a hundred times but this time it was the lead story.

Way to go Kerry!
