Concertgoer Throws Drink at Streisand
By Associated Press

SUNRISE, Fla. - The funny girl wasn't laughing. Barbra Streisand had a drink lobbed at her Monday after a mid-concert skit poking fun at President Bush.

Streisand's publicist, Dick Guttman, said a paper cup filled with some sort of liquid was thrown on stage but apparently did not hit Streisand during her second performance in this Fort Lauderdale suburb.

Streisand's manager, Martin Erlichman, said she shrugged off the incident and responded to the angry audience member by saying: "It's a free country and they're entitled to express their opinion."

It's at least the third time the skit, which includes a George W. Bush impersonator, has angered Streisand's audience. A heckler targeted her at the Philadelphia opening of her 20-city comeback tour, Guttman said, and Streisand made headlines with her response to a jeerer at Madison Square Garden last month.

Erlichman said Streisand, 64, believed the skit was in good fun and noted impersonator Steve Bridges, who wrote it, is a Republican.<snip>

1. I can't wait to see Barbra!
We have tickets (they are my birthday/christmas presents for the next two years) for the last night of tour here in LA.

3. IMHO...if I paid big bucks to see her in concert...I wouldn't want
to see that skit or the guy who impersonates the chimp. I would want to hear her sing.

6. It's only a small part of the show.
Hell, she could walk out, rip a fart and read the phone book while eating a bag of cheetos and I'll be happy.

8. Well, let's hope he doesn't go to a David Cross show because he's
in the mood for some jokes.

5. that's the same performer Barbra defended at her NYC concert

She got upset on his behalf, when that heckler kept bothering them.

And Stephen Colbert -- who spoke at the same press dinner where Bridges and Bush did that joint appearance this spring -- stepped out of character earlier this month, saying that Bridges was "a nice guy" and pointing out that FOX News lauded his impersonation back then, so they were fickle to trash him just because he was onstage with Barbra. (I suspect that Bridges was professional enough to say something supportive to Colbert backstage, even though they have different political views.)

Bridges, by the way, is a born-again evangelical Christian who voted for Bush twice, and has been invited to meet him several times. Arguably he does a better job portraying the friendly, folksy "Dubya" character better than Bush does. Personally I think his jokes are a little lame (and they push that "nice" version of Bush and make him look good by association) -- but Bridges does work pretty hard, flying all over the place for appearances and undergoing a complicated and lengthy makeup job each time. The technical part alone deserves some praise -- Kevin Haney was the original artist who developed it.

(description of process here)

By the way, Barbra could have dumped Steve Bridges from her show at the first sign of negative reviews, but she didn't -- they re-tuned the act and he'll be on the tour for all the times that don't conflict with his own appearances. (So much for liberals being disloyal and untrustworthy!)
