Ultra Orthodox Jews Riot Over Jerusalem Gay Parade

(Jerusalem) A march to protest next month's gay pride parade in Jerusalem turned into a riot Tuesday night as hundreds of members of an ultra Orthodox sect blocked roads and set garbage cans on fire.

Several hundred members of the Haredi sect took part in the march, led by their leaders who wore sack cloths, a Biblical sign of mourning. Protestors carried signs denouncing homosexuality and proclaiming "Jerusalem will not be like Sodom and Gomorrah."

Several blocks into the protest march demonstrators rolled garbage cans into the street to block police and then set the garbage on fire.

The riot came several hours after Jerusalem's police chief placed the force on an "Emergency Alert", something usually done only in a time a war, in preparation for the November 11 LGBT pride parade.

The police department said that it has not yet decided whether to cancel the parade permit issued to Jerusalem Open House, the organizer of the parade, but issued the alert anyway as a result of threats by the Hared.

But Tuesday's riot seems to have taken police by surprise. Mounted police and officers in riot gear took nearly an hour to disperse the crowd. Protestors pelted police with stones and rotten eggs. There were no injuries. Several demonstrators were reportedly arrested.

Religious leaders have called for a prayer service the day of the parade.

More love from fundamentalists. They are the same everywhere. Jew, Christian, and Muslim extremists creating hatred and dissension in every part of the globe. Why do we put up with it? When is enough enough?
Unfortunately the present Israeli government, as well as our own, panders to these bigots and lunatics. They may well give in to them in this case. With the Israeli gov. moving more and more to the right, installing an ethnic cleanser and committing war crimes (like our own cabal) we can only assume things will get worse in the ME. And here at home our own "president" is playing the gay card again and whipping up the hysterical pseudo-Christian bigots. Will it all end in a self-fulfilling apocalypse? Will we let that happen?

Maybe this post should be in the Gay ghetto or in I/P but I think it speaks to a greater issue than either of those.
