DISTRACTION: We were busy whining about JK, AND WE LOST IRAQ TODAY
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 11:48 PM by Atman
That is what this was all about. Sadr City. The "sovereign" Iraq government told us to get fucked. Rummy is finally sending more troops, now that they've told us to get out. Is the next phase of the war going to have to involve ousting the government we just installed? How fucked is that? What was it all for? Anyway, no more Kerry-esque distractions. It's time to send these bastards packing. Eyes on the prize...call CSPAN, call RUSH, call any talk show with a blabbering idiot talking about the remarks of a Senator who isn't even running for office, and get them back on message. Things got SERIOUSLY worse in Iraq today, if that was even possible. That's why they "discovered" the missing word in the Senator's stupid joke.

(on edit: link to my recently posted rant, complete with big, bold fonts!)

6. Oh dear god WAKE UP!
If it wasn't Kerry, it would have been ANYTHING ELSE. Did you even read my post???? Serious shit went down today, and all the stops were pulled out to keep it off the air. Kerry should have said everything he said, and used his mic time to tell you what I just told you. Democracy lost in Iraq today. The final justification for this fucked up chapter in American history just crumbled like one of Bush's peruvian rocks. So what are they going to do? SEND IN MORE TROOPS. Kerry schmerry. If not Kerry, Dean, if not Dean, Hillary, it didn't matter.

11. Anything else? Oh really?
How come NOTHING else did the trick, then? It's because serious shit, as you call it, happens every day in Iraq and John Kerry provided the entertainment-starved media with a break from the action. And I'm the one who needs to wake up...

13. If you think what happened in Iraq is just more of the same ol same ol...
You're exactly who this thread is directed at, because you took the bait and swallowed it whole. What happened is NOT just another day in Iraq. Bush's entire final justification for killing tens of thousand of innocent Iraqis, and 3000 Americans, completely fell apart. You think that's just another day in Iraq? Yikes!

15. No, that's what the media thinks
I'm not your problem here; the media is. Look what every cable station led with tonight. Was it the impending collapse of Iraq? No, it was John Kerry and his half-assed attempt at humor. For 15 freaking minutes on most stations. THEN we finally get to Iraq. Tomorrow may be different, but we lost today thanks to John Kerry, and that's the unhappy truth.

33. If we lost today, it's because the media is aligned with the Morans
The Kerry flap has some entertainment value, so it gets airplay. It may be that some other puff piece critical of a Democratic politician was going to lead anyway.

If they give thirty seconds of Kerry's rebuttal, I see it as a plus for us.

As the NYT said today, it may be a plus anyway because it has brought Iraq to the minds of the American voters again. The last thing BushCo wants discussed right now is Iraq. Pug congressional candidates are running from Bush as hard as they can on this issue.

43. I see your point
They would have used any excuse. Before Bush ordered his illegal invasion of Iraq, I told my husband that it didn't matter what Saddam Hussein did, including crawling on his hands and knees over broken glass, Bush would have invaded anyway, and that's what he did. This is more of the same, it seems to me.

10. Even more proof of the efficacy of the distraction
Thirty-seven new threads a minute about John Kerry pushed EVERYTHING else off the page. I was on DU more than usual today, and yet I never saw that story. But I sure saw lots of posts from DUers fighting each other about whether John Kerry should have told a joke or not. Pretty sad.

Some people love to bitch and moan about the irrelavent. I would post on one of those threads, but it would only bounce a "real story" thread off the front page. Maybe they will go to bed soon, and we can kick the good threads back into contention.

4. Looks That Way
We surrendered a week ago when The Smirk set the-timetable-that-is-not-a-timetable - and the Iraqis know it, even if we don't. The end game is being played out in Iraq. The Rethugs are simply trying to keep it out of sight until next Wednesday.

What a sad catastrophe.

The next few weeks will be spent seeking a way to call this a success. (they're standing up, so we stand down) Give them the keys to our embassy, turn our bases into apartments and businesses, step away from their oil fields, and get the fuck outta Dodge.

Clearly a job for Karl the Wizzard, he has a way with words.

14. It is no more "surrounded and cutoff" now than it was a week ago,
or a month ago, or six months ago. The whole country has been a "no-man's land" for years. What happened today is that Maliki explained to the Dictator what "sovereign" means and also that maliki has more to worry about than the Dictator's mid-term elections. I expect that Maliki will be jettisoned (just like Diem was in Vietnam) and some general will be found who can be spun as the "Anti-Saddam" or some damned thing. Bush isn't through killing American troops yet....

17. "Bush isn't through killing American troops yet...."
That's what makes this so much more disgusting! Look, first of all, it DID get worse today. Much worse. But the really scary part is, our response appears to be that we'll send MORE people to die, but only a relative few, just 20,000 troops, which is still about 80,000 short of what the generals said was needed in the first place. The quagmire devolves into a full-on cluster fuck of epic proportions, and the same morans who couldn't figure out what to do for the last three years, are making more stupid decisions -- in the end, all to protect Halliburton's eleventy-gazillion dollar Embassy project.

:eyes:

I'm sickened by it.

23. "Operation Forward Together" has turned into a complete
fiasco - as is fitting in this fiasco that is the Occupation of Iraq. All it did was get more US troops killed and maimed, and killed and maimed thousands more Iraqis, and for what? Nothing, that's what. To be brutally honest, I can't imagine what the blood-thirsty US Dictator will do next. Whatever it is will be the wrong thing and result in more death, more destruction, more horror. The only rational thing to do at this point is to withdraw all US troops immediately and let the chips fall where they may. Our credibility could not possibly be worse than it already is; it is hard to envision Iraq becoming more chaotic than it already is; removing US troops might - just might - cause a pause in the murder and at least offer a chance for some reasoned negotiations among the Iraqis, themselves. At long last, it may be all that is left...

This is NOT a "KERRY THREAD," and that would be painfully obvious to you if you were actually reading instead of trying to play message board cop in a neighborhood where you're a complete unknown.

You might want to settle down a bit and get to know us here before you start telling people what to do. And maybe pay attention to what your responding to.

The quality of their posts is more important than the quantity.

Sadly, some are deficient in quality, as well.

Thanks for your snark. Consider it returned in kind. And have a nice day, huh? Focus on the war...we're on the same team here, remember.

removed their consulate from Basra because of -mortars-...

That means they cannot even secure the few blocks surrounding the consulate.

The news about the lifting of the Sadr City checkpoints is this: it means that al Maliki--the guy we put in power--is now overtly allied with (or taking orders from) al Sadr and his death squads. That's not exactly the pro-western Democracy we were told we were supporting.
