I believe the total prison population in the US is around 2 million of whom 1 million are Black. In a country where they (we!) represent about 11.8% of the population, Blacks make up around 50% of the prison population!

My cousin is making a report for her last year in high school.

She said she read that more Whites are in Prison than Blacks and other minorities.

I could not believe that but wanted to make sure I was giving her the right information and could not find it on the web when I searched. :(

3. I can't help you with a link.

But i can give you some first hand exp. I have been to prison in North Carolina. Our state percentage for blacks is say 30% for the total population. While incarcerated 85-90% of prisoners were black. From some of my old friend still inside, they say it's changing and more hispanics are really showing up. Not sure on those numbers or rumors as the hispanic flood began just as i was getting out.

This large discrepancy in numbers is largely what got me taking blacks serious about being held down, and abused by the powers that be. i knew in my heart that something had to be wrong. There was no way 30% of the population committed 90% of the crime, as i knew tons of whites who were criminals. It just seemed that middle class whites just got a pass.

Sad fact here is it is all about poverty. The poor ones have to accept a public defender, who never does much defending. The best deal you ever get from a public defender is a plea for a lesser charge, or less time. Those with money to hire their own representation did infinitely better. Example, i had a good lawyer i paid for i had over 70 charges dropped, a bunch reduced and consolidated. I took 80+ charges and did 6yrs for them. Some one who would have had to use a public defender would still be locked up.

This is not exactly what you asked for. It's the percentage of US overall population, by race, who have ever served time in prison.

The numbers don't even begin to add up to 100% although they cover blacks, hispanics and whites. Does that mean that two thirds of the people in jails are native Americans or oriental?
