Since Kerry has told this Bush joke countless other times
Why doesn't Kerry insist that the media play a tape of him saying it as he meant it, so the public can see that it wasn't meant to be a slap to the troups? Wouldn't that be a simple solution?

I know that the msm doesn't normally go out of it's way to help the democrats, but right now while this is "the big news story" I think they would play it.

1. so what is the joke?
seriously, in all of this TV coverage it is not clear to me what the joke was supposed to be? All I am seeing is what he said quoted over and over ad nasuem but no clear indication of what he meant to say.

13. We have to do better
"All I am seeing is what he said quoted over and over ad nasuem but no clear indication of what he meant to say."

If our struggle is reduced to whimpering about what one patrician -meant- about another, we might as well give it up now.

15. I hear you!
I've had out of town family here all week and didn't watch the news for a couple of days. Now this morning, all I see on tv is the Kerry quote over and over, and even here in DU. People allude to what he meant to say, or to the joke he botched, but no one is really clear on what that botched joke was. I think it sits squarely on Kerry's shoulders to clear up what he meant to say. I mean, obviously, Kerry got a top rate education and served two terms in the military and has fought for veteran's rights ever since, so of course his joke was intended as a slap to Bush. But I think, unless people see him telling the joke as it was meant to be (I'm sure there are plenty of videos of his other recent campaign speeches), some folks may not believe that he just "botched" a joke. Of course the republicans won't like him doing this, because it keeps the emphasis on Iraq.

2. Clue..
Kerry is a Bush enabler. His silence regarding the Swift Boaters was instrumental in handing the 2004 election to shrub, he is doing his best to undermine the 2006 elections. The best think Kerry can do for the Democrats is to shut up and stay out of the public eye.

12. or perhaps people who want Kerry to shut up are Bush enablers
You wanted Kerry to say MORE after the Swift boaters but now you want him to "shut up"

Make up your mind.

5. This is the same media that played the distorted tape of Dean
over and over... they knew what they were doing. Character assassination.

The same applies here. The media knows this is a hatchet job and they are in on it. They are mis-framing this on purpose.

10. Is there a video out there
of the other times he's told this joke? That would be a good way to rebutt the Republicans' spin on this.

14. Yes, that's my point. You stated it better.
Thanks. :)

Right now they all want to talk to Kerry to keep this story going, so Kerry should say, OK, I'll talk to you, but in fairness, show the video of what I meant to say.

16. What Gripes Me Is That * Makes Mistakes or Mis-Speaks Every....
time he opens his mouth. The media (except for Letterman and Olberman) don't play and replay *'s quotes over and over and over.
