20 Park Plaza.

Dear friends:

Some of you may have already heard of the five-month long protest in Oaxaca, Mexico and this weekend's death of an American journalist there. Brad Will, the journalist who was killed, was a friend of mine. We met in Buenos Aires and worked together for several months on a solidarity campaign with an indigenous community displaced by a US agro-business.

Brad was shot by persons identified as plainclothes policemen, as he was filming them open fire on demonstrators. Brad was shot in the abdomen and died before he could receive medical attention. I ask for your sympathies not only for Brad, but for the three other civilians who were shot standing for what they believe in: basic rights for all. The people of Oaxaca have been demonstrating for five months in what began as a teacher's strike and has transformed into the demand for the resignation of Oaxaca governor Ulises Ruiz.

Since the killings this weekend, the Mexican federal government has called for federal troops to put down the demonstration. Please keep your eyes out for news of how you can express your solidarities with the people of Oaxaca and urge the Mexican federal government, especially president Vicente Fox, to honor the protester's demand that Oaxacan governor Ulises Ruiz step down.

Those in the Northeast can join this Thursday's 4pm demonstration at the Mexican consulate in Boston. Those in Providence can join a 12 noon remembrance vigil at Kennedy Plaza today (Monday 30 Oct).

Be there if you can. I assume due to the time of day that this will be a candle light vigil.

1. I'll Try Hard To Be There K&R
If we can't stand against this, then we cannot stop it from happening in the US.

2. Yep. It is the old "first they came for" story. I will try to be there too.
Hope we can meet up. I will be the 60 year old long haired woman with Bierkenstocks, a four pronged cane, a poncho and a backpack.
