Democrats, should they control congress, should crush big media
in the anti-trust tradition of Teddy Roosevelt.

3. At the very least they need to bring back the fairness doctrine.
What would be better though is to bring back the anti-trust laws that prohibit big corporations from buying out others and eliminating any competition.

4. That's pretty much a given
It'll be very difficult though since "big media" works for the GOP and is the same entity that tells the public what to believe.

5. Amen. Use the Right's "free market competition" dogma against them.
Bring back the Fairness Doctrine, ownership rules, end cross-medium ownership, etc.

Break them up into tiny little pieces in the name of "better competition".

6. That is necessary, an investigation into why anti trust laws
haven't been enforced since the pubbies (and Clinton, for that matter) have taken over.

If they can hammer out some sort of veto proof coalition, reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine is also vital.

With the latter, Robertson, Falwell, and every right wing screamer would be out on the unemployment line the following Monday.

7. Absolutely. In fact, that may be job number one.
Our democracy is dying as a direct result of media conglomeration.

9. I'm sure they plan to
They've learned the lesson the hard way, you can't expect fair or professional behavior from todays's news media and free market capitalism doesn't work for news coverage in a democracy.

17. So you don't think media conglomerates
have bought up whole markets? Don't know of any specific laws but I do know that our democracy is threatened and manipulation of facts or omissions of important information across our airwaves is rampant.

20. I never said any such thing....
This thread is about anti-trust laws and how they can be used against the media. Dont get me wrong, I despise the media and what its become....especially the right-wing hit-jobs they do. But claiming a break in anti-trust laws is another thing. Frankly, i dont think we're even remotely there. Yet.

22. I'm up for suggestions.
There needs to be a curve on saturation of one group owning so many outlets, especially with the power they wield.

24. Only one law need be enacted.
Prohibit corporations from owning corporations.

Property can't own property; your dog can't own your home.

Require all corporate ownership to be human - in the name of a 'natural' person. Abolish the shell games like Enron - over 500 corporate entities in many different jurisdictions, including the Caymens and Bermuda.

Outlaw it.

25. Media Reform/Fairness Doctrine....Top Priority...without that...nothing
Dems do will ever get traction or be heard. I don't want to go through another decade like what we've been through with the Clinton/Monica and the Bush Fascists EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE!

It's TOP PRIORITY! All of us here know about the Media Whores. They tried to bring down a President and Installed BUSH...and made Democrats lives a living hell for too long! We can't have any more of this!
