TO SKINNER: Can you please delete all posts with the name John Kerry
In them?

Enough of this topic please, I wanted to go into the weekend on a high, wanted to start a positive spiral in preparation for our big win on November 7th, now I am thinking of staying away from DU until after the elections.

This is making me sick.......

1. How about enforcing thread discipline on the topic instead?
Vigorously combine threads, issue a warning that gratuitous new threads will be deleted and leave it at that.

It would be more work for the moderators, but worth it in the run up to the election, IMO.

14. Makes sense to me
I don't post here all that much any more - but I come to scan for hot news and if there is anything else happening, one would be hard put to find it.

Isn't there a Kerry forum where they could all be moved?

55. Why yes, we do, and I'm doing it. Make no mistake.
But if folks would exercise a bit of simple courtesy, that wouldn't be needed. For example, when you see TEN threads on "apologize" followed by ten on "don't" followed by twenty on "Ooooooh, Noooooooo! The GOP will WIN because of this" followed by thirty discussing "Shut up, you fucking trolls" and a dozen more saying "well, I never liked him ANYWAY" and a few more written by clueless tree carvers who think Kerry is on some ballot somewhere this year....it just gets.....well.....WEARYING.

Simple POLITENESS on the part of our membership, by not starting threads just to see their little headline in the center of the page for two frigging minutes, would enhance the flow of information overall.

But hey, one can't mandate thoughtfulness or courtesy, can one? One can only hope that people will behave as well as they can manage, not as bad as they wanna be.

5. I heartedly concur.
But perhaps instead of deleting or locking new threats re: Kerry, a special discussion forum can be set up for those wanting to keep the issue on the front burner, as the GOP media would like us to do.

18. How about a forum called "Hot Topic of the Day"
This happens on a regular basis - some issue comes up and brazillions of threads are created for days or weeks. Maybe a forum could be created, if there are more than a thousand new threads on a subject in one day on a topic, they all get moved into that forum, until the number of new threads decreases to under a hundred per day. Then people who want to stay on top the Hot Topic could jump right into that forum, and people who want to find the Luke-Warm Topics could look in GD.

17. No one is advocating censorship
just that there are too many existing threads on the subject and there is no need to create more when opinions and news can be posted in the existing ones.

The noise from all the egos demanding their own headlines means that
A) If you want to make sure you know all the details and info, you have to read through dozens of threads instead of one or two and
B) other newsworthy items can't be seen for more than a few moments - then they scroll off to page 2

31. Censorship would be not allowing people to have their say
This is just asking for respect for the community and saying what you want in existing threads.

I think combining would be better than deleting.

45. A lousy way to determine if it is a duplicate topic, so I disagree.
Moderators should actually read the OPs and determine if it is a duplicate topic. And even then, they lock and combine - they do not delete. Automatic deletion is censorship.

20. I don't think anyone advocates censorship. It's the repetitive nature
of the exercise that gets irritating. It's like having to wade through knee-deep shit to get to breakfast. No, you won't die from it, probably, but it's distateful.

If one person posts a thread giving a point of view on the matter, it's not that hard for someone with a similar view, or even an opposing one, to post ON THE SAME THREAD so that the discussion is consolidated in one location.

But some want to pee on the virtual tree, make their own mark with a thread they've 'started' all by themselves because it makes them feel important, I guess. And thus, there are threads everywhere, plopped like dogshit on the carpet, a veritable expanse of smelly landmines that we must navigate to get to other important issues of the day.

It's not the level or tone of discussion or even the amount of discussion that bugs me, it's a lack of basic netiquette that I find annoying, frankly!

Same principle as "don't feed the trolls." What I don't get is why people aren't reading the freakin' board in the first place. It's like half of them think we don't realize Kerry made a remark or something, and they think they're telling us something new!

In the GD forum people tend to discuss the hot topic issue of the day. This Kerry thing is no different.

Last week it was Rush and Michael J. Fox.

Tomorrow it will probably be something else.

creating a dangerous black-hole-thread-thing.

Let me illustrate:

The big blue ball is your thread. The hazy white stuff all over the damn place is the "John Kerry Fog of Confusion," eating all that it touches. The red swirly bit is DU. The blackness at the center of DU represents Skinner's delete key. If Skinner deletes the Kerry Fog, it would also begin to suck up your big blue ball, threatening to choke DU in the process.

Clearly, the Kerry Fog must be stopped at its source, before it threatens life as we know it.

Thank you for your time.

Either way this is bullshit. Some people are obviously freeper trolls trying to tell us how "badly" Kerry "fucked up" and how it's going to help the GOP :eyes: and some people are just terminal Kerry haters who will jump on any reason to piss on him even if it means directly aiding a GOP-driven smear. Either way they have demonstrated their willingness to do the GOP's dirty work and they don't belong here.

57. It's not hard to spot them
If you've never seen them before, but the concern is over-arching and the tone didactic, you've hit paydirt. Often, the user profile is disabled. One asshole even had a GOP code word spelled backward as his user name. They aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree, certainly.

As for the regulars who hate Kerry, well, they're well known, and so what....so long as they'll vote for the Democrat, even if they have to hold their nose, they're free to speak here.

It's these odd lots who must be getting their post counts up in extremely obscure forums and then suddenly doing the rounds of GD, GDP and LBN to shit on JFK that I find, well, interesting.

When I'm done censoring the people who have a different opinion on John Kerry, who else would you like me to censor?

Reasonable people can disagree on whether Kerry screwed up -- it doesn't make them trolls. This is a discussion forum: expect disagreement.

People talk about whatever is in the news. As soon as the media gets bored with this Kerry thing, then people will stop posting about it here. Until then, use the ignore function to get rid of the people you think are trolls.
