A Stronger America-Minnesota, based in Alexandria, Va., burst onto the scene this week with piercing ads against Hatch. A mailing accuses him of "a 20 year pattern of intimidation, arrogance and abuse of power" and TV ads say he is under investigation for "influence peddling" and supports tax increases.
Hatch took aim at the group on Wednesday, which he said was devoting $500,000 to ads critical of him in the final week of his campaign against Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He called on Pawlenty to denounce the ads and to urge the group to reveal its donors. Hatch said its claims against him are off-base.
"What is particularly disturbing about this group is that fundraising was carefully structured to avoid disclosure, to defeat the purpose of Minnesota's campaign finance laws," Hatch said at a news conference.
