Bechtel ends Iraq rebuilding after a rough 3 years

David R. Baker, Chronicle Staff Writer

Wednesday, November 1, 2006

Bechtel Corp. went to Iraq three years ago to help rebuild a nation torn by war. Since then, 52 of its people have been killed and much of its work sabotaged as Iraq dissolved into insurgency and sectarian violence.

Now Bechtel is leaving.

But Bechtel -- which charged into Iraq with American "can-do" fervor -- found it tough to keep its engineers and workers alive, much less make progress in piecing Iraq back together.

"Did Iraq come out the way you hoped it would?" asked Cliff Mumm, Bechtel's president for infrastructure work. "I would say, emphatically, no. And it's heartbreaking."

No one likes a civil war.

Redeploy EVERY AMERICAN military person out of that civil war - NOW.

Never Forget: George W. Bush willfully violated National Security to cover-up his willful launch of a war of aggression and illegal occupation of Iraq.... and, if you doubt it, just check 'the google' ...

2. Bechtel
I worked for Bechtel in 1969 in Fla. They only know one way to do jobs, that is by threatening every worker with firing or replacement by non- union workers. Don't forget Fla is a right to work state. They were crooked and skanky then and still, but I would bet anything that they made a profit before they left.

8. I wonder how soon Halliburton will announce departing plans from Iraq??
Couldn't imagine Iraqi troops fronting cover for halliburton, half of them would be insurgents in troops uniforms.

9. who, exactly, signed off on the completed work?
surely the contracts had statements of work; with requirements for provisional acceptance and final acceptance of 'Work' ... possibly even had a requirement for punch-list items to be completed/fixed before final acceptance, etc.

or did Bechtel regulate/monitor its own work and submit invoices?

are the lights on? is the water running?

Bechtel went in to profiteer not to rebuild a war torn country ... imho

Stephen Bechtel sits on the Board of Overseers at the right-wing Hoover Institution (as does Richard Mellon Scaife of the Council for National Policy)
