Bush Admin Delaying Release Of Annual Hunger Report Until After Elections
The Bush administration is delaying the release of an annual hunger report until after the elections.
Democrats say hunger report stalled
By LIBBY QUAID, AP Food and Farm Writer

WASHINGTON - Democrats are blaming politics for the Bush administration's decision to wait until after the election to issue a report on hunger in the United States.

The Agriculture Department report has generally been released in October, a month after annual poverty figures are released by the Census Bureau. The report has shown steady increases in the number of people struggling with hunger, from 31 million in 1999 to 38 million in 2004.

Democrats on Wednesday accused the White House of a politically motivated delay. Competitive elections across the country will decide next week whether President Bush's party keeps control of Congress.

USDA officials said the report has long been set for a mid-November release and that the delay is not political.

2. That bastard.
Even if it hasn't changed from 2004, that's still 8% of Americans going hungry each day.

EIGHT PERCENT.

8 in 100 Americans go hungry every day.

Most of them are CHILDREN.

You can bet they aren't the children of Republicon war profiteers.

You can also bet the numbers have worsened considerably if Bush** is sitting on the report.

What a medal of honor for the richest country in the world! God forbid we should use some of those riches on our hungry children rather than quagmires that KILL THEM!!

7. Since the US just recently went over 300M that's...
24 MILLION people going hungry every day, if the numbers are still at 8%.

9. Sorry, my wonky math
The report states that 38 million went hungry in 2004. Against a population of 293m in July that year, that's 13% of Americans who went hungry. Against today's population of 300m that's 12.7% -- but it's bound to be worse since the number of hungry rose from 1999 to 2004 and the economy hasn't improved.

3. "The delay is not political"
Gee, how could I have been so cynical to think that?
