In Tennessee's suspenseful U.S. Senate race, Republican Mayor Bob Corker now leads 48% to 47%. With leaners added, Corker's edge widens slightly to 49% to 47%.

Our October 23 survey showed Corker with the same wispy advantage, then of 47% to 46%. With leaners, Corker had a two-point edge in that poll as well.

The race is a toss-up, but 50% think Corker will win, while only 38% think Ford will win; 12% aren't sure. As the media often note, if Ford wins, he'll be the first black Senator from the South since Reconstruction.

Corker is viewed as conservative by 51% of the electorate, as moderate by 30%. Though Ford is often depicted as more moderate than the Corker campaign insists, only 36% accept that characterization; 47% says he's liberal.

The telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports October 30, 2006. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

That is a lot smaller lead for Corker than I have heard other places.

16. I'll take it as good news.
It really pains me with Ford. In way i want him to win for the Dem party. On the other hand i just have started liking him less, and less. It just seems the more i hear him speak the less i like him. He really creeped me out on Real Time when i found out he had the 12 commandments printed on the back of his business cards.

He'd be one i'd have to hold my nose to vote for, but i reckon i'd do it for the over all good.

21. I was trying to have a discussion
with someone else about how Ford is a good influence on the conservative protestant / evangelical crowd in TN. We need to challenge their support for one party and for draconian use of Government power. Ford is no doubt a compromise for many but that process would be a good thing not bad. Divisive politics is not the best thing for the country. Example: in a recent Newsweek article about Ford they interviewed a pastor at an evangelical church who openly advocated the Republican party talking points in '04. This year he is staying out of it and Ford is going into these churches and presenting an alternative.

Ok, you or someone else can call me some names now.

I kinda agree with you. I feel him winning as a baby step towards more progressive candidates in the future. Like i said, i can put my personal feelings aside for a second for the future.

Here in Okla. you must move way to the center to even be considered. We finally got a Dem. Governor and Hope to keep him! He keeps pretty quiet, cool fellow.

We had Gov. Keating prior to Brad Henry and he kept Ok in turmoil the whole time. Got Right to Work approved, and hammered the Worker's comp Court hurting the worker's ability to be properly compensated, and all the repub. ways to hurt the masses (like Okla. is a bustling metro!). Keating's wife ran for office, senator I think, and she got slammed, gawd that was fun. She was one of those whiny females with "family values" that okies needed to be reminded of. (SARCASM)

28. Oh i know, i live in a sea of red.
I Live in N.C., owning land in Tennessee. My state N.C. is kinda purple. We elect mostly Dem to state, and local gov, but trend repuke in national. So you end up with a state that has fairly liberal laws and policies statewide, yet votes against much of the same nationally. It's mystifying really.

29. The national vs local difference
if I were to guess I would chalk that up to wanting lower federal taxes and more conservative social policy at the Federal level.

27. Cant say this makes me hapy
While i would love to see the dems in control of congress I don't like ford even a little bit. I have seen him break with the CBC one too many times for my tastes. If there is any sanity left in congress the CBC provides a large part of it IMHO and this little creep appears to me to care way too much about his career to be interested in sanity.
