Two years ago, November 2, 2004-the day of the dead democracy. The day that Kerry supposedly ending up losing to Bush because of the electoral votes of one state, Ohio. See: What Went Wrong in Ohio by John Conyers.
http://www.truthout.org/docs_05/010605Y.shtmlSo many of us here, spent hours upon hours reading everything about that election in the months that followed. It never felt "right" to us. We knew about Diebold. We knew about computer vulnerability. We knew about Kenneth Blackwell. We knew about voter suppression. We knew about exit polls that didn't make any sense. We knew about six hours, nine hour waits in line to vote if you just happened to be Black and in a Democratic district in Ohio.
The memories of that time are very clear to me. It felt like someone had died. It was dark, and we were here on DU searching for answers, almost completely alone. We were ignored by all mainstream media, except for a few days on the Keith Olbermann show. And then picked up in rebuttal to him, as if to even question the results of an election that had numerous irregularities was to be crazy. To question what you are told is to be conspiracy theorist. To ask questions is to question the powers that be. We thought this was a Democracy.
So this morning two years after that fateful election, I'm watching The View on ABC, which I had sworn off for a long time, but Rosie O'Donnell is on there spreading some truth. She actually said the words habeas corpus last week, which I'm certain has never been said on daytime women's chat show before.
So they have a discussion of all those things we were discussing endlessly in November and December of 2004. All of them. Because of this documentary on HBO. Even the Republican gal on the show said it was a major concern! Anybody could hack our votes. And Joy Behar wondered WHY this hasn't been fixed. WHY this is coming out minutes before another election.
Well I've been wondering this for two straight years myself. I know some here have worked on this for years before this. I was late to believing in any election fraud. So I know this movie is controversial on DU because of Bev Harris, but I'm going to have to watch it tonight. Maybe we aren't crazy, after all, it was on the View!
