Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on Thursday U.S. troops should remain in Iraq for up to three more years to enable the local authorities to develop their own security forces. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15526137/

President Bush said Wednesday he wants Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney to remain in his administration until the end of his presidency, extending a job guarantee to two of the most-criticized members of his team. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15516265/

Charlie Cook, analysis: As Election Day nears, the fundamental dynamics of this cycle have not changed on either the national "macro" level or the "micro" level. Looking at the individual 435 House, 33 Senate and 36 gubernatorial races, this still looks to be a very ugly midterm election for the GOP. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15527799/

DAYTONA BEACH -- Voting machines could stop accepting votes an hour or more before the polls close on Election Day because of a glitch in their automated clocks, elections officials said Wednesday. "To say I am frustrated is an understatement," said Ann McFall, the Volusia County supervisor of elections, in an e-mail to the county Canvassing Board. http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/News/Headlines/frtHEAD03POL110206.htm

Diebold Inc. says a documentary that explores problems with electronic voting is inaccurate and unfair. Diebold sent a letter to HBO Chief Executive Chris Albrecht expressing concern about "Hacking Democracy," an 81-minute film debuting Thursday night that claims the company's voting machines can be tampered with and can manipulate election results. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/4303904.html

States can use their U.S. grants for abstinence education to reach out to people in their 20s rather than just focusing on teenagers, new federal guidance says. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/politics/4298084.html

Mark Foley is being cast as a lot of things these days. But a B-movie actor? In the wake of his resignation from Congress, people are rediscovering Foley's little-known role in a straight-to-DVD action flick. During a short role as a congressman who hires mercenaries to recover his kidnapped daughter, Foley shows an acting range that politely could be called limited. But with the disgraced Fort Pierce Republican now a household name, the movie is generating new buzz. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/state/epaper/2006/11/02/a9a_foley_1102.html

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- A jail went into lockdown and recounted its prisoners on Halloween night after a former inmate was spotted trick-or-treating in his old orange prisoner's jumpsuit. The former inmate, Oscar Aponte, was taking his daughter trick-or-treating in Peekskill on Tuesday night when a county correction officer - also out trick-or-treating with her child - spotted the familiar jumpsuit. She confronted him, and he ran and drove off. The officer took down the man's license plate and called authorities. The jail went into lockdown until a prisoner count established that no one was missing.

5. You're right, it's a democratic county, therefore each election...
...from 2000 on in this county has been screwed up royally by all kinds of dirty tricks and shennigans.
