Archaeologist cleared in Islamic scarf dispute

11/2/2006
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - A court acquitted a 92-year-old archaeologist Wednesday for claiming in a book that Islamic-style head scarves were first worn more than 5,000 years ago by priestesses initiating young men into sex.

An Istanbul court acquitted Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, an expert on the Sumerian civilization that arose around the third millennium B.C. in Mesopotamia. The panel of three judges ruled that Cig's actions did not constitute a crime.

Cig was accused of inciting hatred or insulting people based on their religion. She could have been imprisoned for 11/2 years had she been convicted.

Cig joins a long list of people who have been prosecuted in Turkey for expressing their views, including this year's Nobel Prize winner for literature, Orhan Pamuk, and novelist Elif Shafak.

I don't even know what to say. Except this is probably a model government for some of the wack jobs we have in our country. Throw em out before it's too late.
