Seriously. You should have all volunteered for your local candidates. You can work the polls, make phone calls, drive people to voting booths, etc; it's not too late. And don't give me that "I have to work" excuse either. You should have asked off for the day, and if you couldn't, then you're too busy to post on DU anyway.

No excuses. No posting on DU until about 8PM EST on Tuesday. Make your promise here.

We'll be at Defcon5 well before the mornings out.

Me...I'll be at work and won't be able to post. I figure I'll be lucky if I can even access this site when I get home Tuesday evening.

17. I'll be the Election Officer for my precinct all day, then at Dem HQ for
party. Big, big party!!!

I was very unhappy with the way elections were run here 6 years ago so I've worked on the system, helped get the previous election Administrator replaced (not easy because it's a political appointment), got our polling place moved from a too-small building with insufficient parking to a location with lots of light and space, and lots of parking. Handicapped parking is close to the door and there's even a portico where people can be dropped off and picked up if it's raining or they have trouble walking.

Then I got our precinct election staff changed to 1/2 Democrats (as it was supposed to have been but wasn't but nobody complained) and soon after that I was asked to become Election Officer.

So, sometimes I get frustrated because we've not accomplished enough but then I look back at how much improvement we've had in my county and my precinct for the voting process. Better administration, better location, bipartisan staff, etc. Unfortunately, I ended up having to work all of election Day when I want to be home watching the news, the exit polls, etc. Last election, by the time I got the voting machines to the Election Office, waited for the tallying process to complete, and got to the Democratic HQ for the party, it was basically all over. Darn!

But, it's my satisfaction to work on this knowing this is what it takes to make sure the GOP doesn't steal elections (or at least doesn't steal them easily) in my county and precinct. It's one of the concrete things I can do make our democracy better. And I've ben slogging away at it for 6 years and had great impact here.

And please, if you or anyone you know can help, volunteer to work on Election Day (or during Early Voting) in your area. After the elction, call your Election Office and find out what you have to do to officially sign-up or volunteer. All over the country we're short-handed and the aging of the poll workers is of great concern. Be a mensch! Be an Election Worker.

DU should be closed to everything except:

11. You should wait there quietly.
Eventually it will be your turn to be preemptively invaded and then you will be an American citizen (certain rights excluded). When that happens, make sure you work the polls!

14. Oh, I forgot about that. My apologies.
You guys can archive everything on your own computers, and then, at midnight (US Eastern Time), you can each post helpful little summaries of everything we've missed.

Try to spell everything using American words. There is no such thing as "colour."

I'm kidding.

18. I will be posting here
I am taking care of a sick wife and homeschooling a 5yr old (plus making sure said child of mine does not get into trouble, like riding around on the dog with a knife slicing up the furniture).

Now if there is something I can do using my computer (since I can keep an eye on things while on it) send it my way. Emailing friends to get them out to vote, etc and so on.

20. You're excused. I hope your wife is doing better.
If you can take an hour or two out of your day, I'm sure that your local Dem. office could give you a list of people to call to remind them to get out and vote. You could do this from home.

different than "promise to not be on DU on Tues because you should be out working at election/ for dems, etc." I understand your point, but think there is a better way to encourage people than you should not post here, promise you won't, etc.

27. I can make that promise. I'm working as an election judge.
Have to be at my assigned precinct at 5:15am on Tuesday morning. The polls in Illinois open at 6:00am and don't close until 7:00pm that night. After 7:00pm, the process of counting and transmitting the votes start. I'm hoping to be home by 8:30/9:00pm CST and I'll try getting on DU at that point.

Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 11:29 PM by Susang
It's presumptuous for you to assume that they can. After all these years on DU, I would think you'd realize that. How about you promise to worry about your own actions on Tuesday and let other people be responsible for their own? You don't know what I or anyone else here has done, you have no right to ask anyone to promise anything.

I wish I could stay out in the burbs for Tammy's victory party, but I have to be home so I can get to work the next day. The Repukes are dumping money on her opponent, but she's still in the lead, and frankly, the Repukes I met going door to door seem pretty dispirited. I had a few say that while they can't vote for a Dem, they're not voting for the Bush clone either.

The Dems, OTOH, are really fired up, and the independents seemed to be leaning hard toward Tammy.

Duckworth is going to be a great rep in our new House of Reps.

BTW, Melissa Bean, Rove's No. 1 target, is WAY ahead in her race, after just barely beating Phil Crane in 04. Rove spent millions on this race, all wasted.

I can vote and I can send them money but I am not allowed to volunteer in any other way. Conflict of interest rules or something. I work for the state, that's why. It's stupid, considering how Greg Abbott has used HIS state employees and his office to campaign.

35. I just signed up to be a volunteer poll-watcher on Tuesday.
I'm intending on keeping an eagle eye on the Diebold voting machines.

Larimer County, CO is in general a nice place to live, and I have yet to see the vote suppression that made the news in Ohio and Florida, but I'm going to help keep it honest.
