Hey America! FEEL SAFER W/ INCOMPETENT REPUB IDIOTS IN CHARGE???? (NYT Bombshell Tomorrow!!)

U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Guide

Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.

But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.

Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for the director of national intelligence said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”

Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms, had privately protested last week to the American ambassador to the agency, according to European diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. One diplomat said the agency’s technical experts “were shocked” at the public disclosures.

11. This SHOULD Be The Fucking STAKE in the HEART of these Monsters!!
"The director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte, had resisted setting up the Web site, which some intelligence officials felt implicitly raised questions about the competence and judgment of government analysts. But President Bush approved the site’s creation after Congressional Republicans proposed legislation to force the documents’ release."

17. So This Is Drudge's Bombshell???
Pfffft!

So Saddam had a copy of Popular Bombmaking from 1990 and this constitutes that he could have dropped a mushroom cloud on American cities in 2003? So we have no real bomb, no plutonium or even a centrafuge...just plans?

This is it? And I thought this was gonna be a two day story? But then the wingnut hate radio is sure to be abuzz tomorrow about how they now have "Saddam's Plans"...and they'll distort and twist the story to fit whatever agenda needs fitting. They gotta keep that nuke boggie man out there or the last remaining pilar of this despicable war falls away.

18. That's not the point at all.
The point is that they had a bunch of old pre-1991 documents relating to Saddam's previous attempts to buils a nuke. Most of this stuff was in Arabic and and had never been translated (because the Bushies don't have enough Arabic translators). But the Bushies were so sure these documents contained proof of the existence of WMD-related programs that they put them out there on the Internets. Only afterwards did they discover there was really sensitive stuff in there that would help Iran with their nuclear research. So basically what they did is give nuke secrets to Iran and any other tin-pot dictators or terrorist groups.

And violating the Patriot Act, in the process...

21. Yes. He micromanaged his generals and made a lot of bad decisions.
Some historians think that his refusal to allow the first jet airplane, the Messerschmitt-262, to be used as a fighter instead of a bomber was a major factor in the Nazis' defeat.

20. As Long As The Let Dr. Khan Run Free
Did it matter where those documents came from...Teheran could call the factory direct.

Even if they did have WMD designs, tell us something we and the UN didn't know in 1991? What's that have to do with 2003?

Also so what if they have the plans...look at North Korea...they have plans and from what we see their nuke probably was a dud. It takes more than a schematic to make a bomb...and Saddam may have had the people to make a bomb prior to '91 and surely didn't afterwards.

Nonetheless, I do like the spin that this was giving away secrets and violating the Patriot act...just another example of this regime's wreckless handling of intelligence that has not only made us less safe, but all but defanged the CIA as an effective espionage agency.

I had an MI MOS when I was in the army. This is not how to handle classified documents.

I can't believe that these idiots are entrusted with this kind of information.

It was really dumb when DCI Porter Goss said that he knew where Osama was. This tops that.
