Friends of Andy - What Do You Say?
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 12:34 AM by Stephanie

After all we've been through, from helping Andy with his investigations to doing everything we could to keep him alive - what do you have to say now about HBO's 'Hacking Democracy?'

It all started here at DU.

Despite my objections, I'd say it was an effective documentary, and while it didn't show Bev as she is, that's no doubt for the best. Regardless of anything else, it was so sweet/sad to see Andy hard at work trying to save democracy right up to the end.

So, Andy's friends, and I know he had many here at DU, what did you think about the documentary? Post your reviews.

Hopefully, I will get to see it.

Gotta love it, Andy hasn't been forgotten and that is what he wanted.

Simply to be remembered and to have made a difference. The documentary fulfills his wishes. :)

5. I'm watching it right now. The hagiography aside,
I think it's well done -- digestible. It makes the vendors look like sleeze, it makes our politicians look out of touch, it's scary. And, that's the right message, imho.

They showed my former Sec of State confronting Diebold, they show a variety of people in their moment of understanding and outrage. That was effective. From poll workers to computer geeks, the message was consistent: our votes are not being counted properly.

6. Someone was asking if anything ever comes from what we do on DU
This answered that question didn't it! Andy had a very important impact on our country and should go down as someone who helped save our democracy. His face should be right up their on Mt. Rushmore! I truly believe that! He had a very powerful impact!

18. Andy would be proud.
not because he got some personal recognition or had a film dedicated to him, but because his message got out. I met him a few times, and one thing was clear, he wanted people to hear what he had learned about the dangers these machines posed. That was his message and this film is part of his legacy. Andy lives.

39. Dear Friends of Andy--
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 08:29 AM by elehhhhna
I never met him face to face but spent hours on the phone in March '05. He coached me through stopping out county's purch of Diebold (we got E-slates--not any better, really). Those calls from Andy got me off this chair and OUT there, and I've been out there ever since.

Not a bible nut but there's one favorite story that's been popping into my head since last nights debut.

This part:

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee. Several hours later in the night, the disciples encounter a storm. Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. This terrifies the disciples and they think they are seeing a ghost. Jesus tells them in verse 27,"Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter replies, "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water." So Jesus invites Peter to come. Peter gets out of the boat and begins walking on the water toward Jesus. But when Peter takes his eyes off Jesus and sees the wind and waves, he begins to sink. Peter cries out to the Lord and Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and catches Peter. As they climb into the boat together, the storm ceases.

That's what Andy did for me and so many, many others. He simply and graciously extended his hand to help. He said "Don't be afraid, just do it." We did. And there's no turning back now.

21. it's good to see that Bev finally got round to seeing how important...
'the code' is in these machines, when my hubby used to post on DU some 4+ years back, he & her would always go back & forth; she railing though at what she couldn't exactly say just that it was wrong, and he speaking as to the security issues & need to secure 'the code' and here it is...

cool, now let's lock these machines down & into a state of certifiable compliance and no i don't care about their trade secrets; this is not Cocoa Cola, or KFC's secret recipe we're talking here this is the democracy of America and it's certifiable election results

Didn't you like the way it points out how Kerry KNEW about fraud? If we win (which we will unless they steal it again) what do you wanna bet that they accuse the Dems of stealing it?

Wonder why they went out of their way to show Gore WELCOME Bush to the WH? What purpose does that serve?

Hacking Democracy was all about Bev. Too bad she couldn't behave like a human being when Andy was still with us.

Andy knows the score. I guess that's really all that matters. :patriot:

Many years ago

What a strange whimsical place

You might end up in jail for three years for smoking a joint - but the jails employed the best of the dance world, theatre world, poetry world, music world, to come in and teach the prisoners.

And the prisoners went home every weekend because the Norwegian governemnt thought it cruel to keep people away from their families

I wonder what Andy would say about it. In the end, it comes down to this:

Will the airing of this documentary help, or hurt, the cause? If it helps, I'm glad. The issue is much bigger than Bev Harris, and she is not going to distract me from that.

47. It was really well done. And most civilians don't even know
and will never know who that grifter is. What they will see is normal looking people asking questions and getting weird answers from vendors. They'll see politicians not really being on top of it except for Kevin Shelley. They'll get a sense of how insecure the whole set up is.

That's what we wanted, no?

50. Boy howdy, if I'd never heard about election fraud before watching that...
...I'd still be sitting on the couch in shock, 12 hours later. It was astounding.

You're right about how most people don't know the backstory on BH and how all they'll see is normal-looking, staggeringly dedicated and patriotic people showing how the vote can be stolen in broad daylight. I can't imagine the impact on somebody who has never heard of this issue but I'm sure it's huge.

BTW, may I add a shoutout to Ion Sanchez to your comment about politicians (other than Shelley)? What a good person he is. :patriot:

Although there is so much more to the story, it's probably best that it be left out of the documentary. If the whole point is to question whether or not the machines could be hacked, then EVERYONE succeeded.
