BUSH ADMIN POSTED NUCLEAR BOMB BUILDING GUIDE ON INTERNET…

We have lost nearly 3,000 of our beloved soldiers because of the threat of Iraq having WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

and NOW the Bush administration is fucking PUBLISHING "nuclear bombs for dummies" on the internet??????

I mean, why the HELL aren't we just drop shipping 'nukular' manuals into Iran, Iraq and Syria?

Holy shit. Do we realize the significance of this?!!@#$!!! If we don't jump on this with everything

we got -- then we DESERVE everything we get.

By WILLIAM J. BROAD
Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who had said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.

But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.

Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for the director of national intelligence said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”

Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms, had privately protested last week to the American ambassador to the agency, according to European diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. One diplomat said the agency’s technical experts “were shocked” at the public disclosures.

The documents, roughly a dozen in number, contain charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that nuclear experts who have viewed them say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums. For instance, the papers give detailed information on how to build nuclear firing circuits and triggering explosives, as well as the radioactive cores of atom bombs. (emphasis added)

Nuclear Lab Breach Could Be 'Devastating'

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/03/national/main2151021.shtml?source=RSSattr=HOME_2151021

Nov. 3, 2006

(CBS)

The recent security breach at Los Alamos National Laboratory was very serious,
with sensitive materials being taken out of the facility -- possibly
including information on how to deactivate locks on nuclear weapons,
officials tell CBS News.

Officials say there is no evidence the information taken from Los Alamos was sold
or transferred to anybody else, but there is no way to be sure right now.

...Multiple sources now tell CBS News that the material includes sensitive weapons-design data.

A federal official who has been briefed on the issue said at least three USB thumb-drives
were involved. Those small storage drives contained 408 separate classified documents ranging
in importance from Secret National Security Information (pertaining to intelligence)
to Secret Restricted Data (pertaining to nuclear weapons).

... one federal official recently briefed on the issue says "It's devastating."

If a nuclear weapon were stolen, the information
"would tell the terrorists everything they need to do to get a weapon to fire."

this story was from april of this year:

CBN.com – WASHINGTON - Earlier this month, the Bush administration began releasing some of the two million classified documents captured by U.S. forces in postwar Iraq and Afghanistan.

Considering what they have already revealed, it has left many wondering why it took so long to open them up.

But critics soon may need to re-think their barbs, thanks to the release of Saddam's secret documents.

Republican Congressman Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) is chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He remarked, "There are still a lot of key individuals who have never been interviewed, there's been a lot of sites that have never been investigated, and there have been lots of documents that have never been translated.”

He led the fight on Capitol Hill to have the documents released to the public.

“We know that Saddam had a systemic approach in place to destroy a lot of the documents. These are the things that he missed,” Hoekstra said.

Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 02:45 AM by slaveplanet
when the same thing(and probably the exact same documents in this current revelation) happened in 2005?

Obeidi escaped the fate of his former boss when the CIA intervened with the Army and got him released. Knowing that he was a marked man, he decided that his only hope was to go public. He consented to an interview with CNN, and soon afterward the CIA whisked him and his family off to Kuwait, where he underwent weeks of interrogations.

On June 26, the CIA posted a press release about Obeidi's cache -- the most valuable WMD evidence the U.S. has yet obtained in Iraq -- on its official website. It also put up digital photos of the components and even one of the key centrifuge diagrams. The pictures, which Albright says could be "incredibly useful" to any regime trying to start a covert nuclear program, were online for almost a week -- long enough to be downloaded and made freely available on the Internet -- before the agency took them down. Literally buried for 12 years, some of Saddam's hoard of nuclear knowledge got out because of the U.S. government, not in spite of it.

36. They are ALREADY SPINNING IT. Check this out:
NYT and IAEA slam Bush in pre-election meaneuver

Not for the first time, the IAEA is teaming up with the New York Times to embarrass Bush on the even of an election. I seem to recall that the International Atomic Energy Agency (a United Nations Agency known by the acronymn “IAEA”) had previously tried an election eve gambit (also with the cooperation of the NYT) . Specifically, the IAEA claimed that negligence on the part of the US led to the looting of tons of high explosive in Iraq. Supposedly, under US guard, these explosives had gone missing. The Pentagon was later able to deflate this “expose” by showing that the Hussein regime had already moved this stockpile of explosives before the invasion by coalition forces. Back then, the UN was accused of meddling in the US Presidential election; now it and its partner The New York Times is once again attempting to influence American elections by casting aspersions on the competency of a Republican Administration.

Certainly there’s no love lost beween the Bush Administration and Mohammed El-Baradei, the feckless leader of the IAEA, that the Administration had hoped to replace after his term expired. The New York Times, true to form, has used its franchise for partisan purposes.

The information on how to build a bomb has been out there, freely available in libraries across the country for years and decades now, if you knew what you were doing. Hell, back in the seventies a kid from Ohio ginned up a working model of a bomb as a high school project from information he acquired from various local libraries. Yes, the Pentagon, NRC, DOE and others freaked, but they also said that the kid had done such a good job that all he need was some plutonium.

Whether or not Bush put this info out there is immaterial. If a person really wanted to build a bomb, and had training in nuclear physics, they could do so whether or not these documents were released. Yes, the irony is delicious, but the threat is overblown. You would have to remove virtually every single bit of information on nuclear physics if you are that worried, and frankly that's not going to happen.

50. Not according to this.....

51. It might be that these are fairly sophisticated circuits, etc.
But having worked in the nuclear industry, knowing what is freely available in the public arena, I stand by my statement. If it wasn't illegal, I would be willing to bet a great deal of money that I could build a bomb within a year using only publicly available documents. Hell, if you have a decent size university nearby, go stroll through their nuclear physics section in their library and see just how detailed these matters get. Again, it isn't the knowlege, or lack there of that is preventing people from building a bomb, it is lack of plutonium that is keeping the bombs out of the hands of ordinary citizens. Hell, go look at the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs, they are really quite simple instruments.

Again, this is the price we pay for letting out the nuclear genie.

82. Right - but if you set up a website as a CENTRAL REPOSITORY on "how to"
build a nuclear bomb, umm... I'm pretty sure you'd be getting a call from the Department of Homeland Security. Wouldn't you say?

The point is, it is COMPLETELY counter productive to the National Security of the United States to be HELPING and potentially removing any final technical obstacles terrorists might have in their attempts to build a nuclear bomb. That's the point.

You may "think" you can build an effective nuclear device, but you know (if you claim to be an engineer/physicist of some sort) that you ALWAYS run into technical obstacles/challenges that were unforeseen when building something with any level of complexity.

So for the US Government to be posting data on the internet that could help you iron out those obstacles, if you were a terrorist under, say a "deadline"... that would be kind of umm... DANGEROUS to us all.

Will you think it is such a good idea then that such a big deal was made of this issue? Man, start thinking like a chess master, three-ten moves ahead. Rove and his ilk are masters of this, which is why we've been getting our asses handed to us for the past few elections. High time some folks on this side of the political divide started doing the same.

97. Yeah really. The "secret" of nuclear weapons has been
out of the bag for about 50 years. The barrier for people wanting to build a nuke is not how to do it, but how to get the materials. I'm as anti-proliferation as anybody and this story raised little more than a shrug from me. It's another example of the misadministration's stupidity, yeah, but as far as being really dangerous, well they do worse stuff daily than this.

Bush/Cheney LIED about the nuclear threat from Bagdad. They probably just made these documents up anyway, the way they make up so much else.

If you were a Dictator surrounded by enemies, wouldn't you?

Thing is, the production of bomb grade fissionable material is the key. All the Engineers and Technicians you have scouring 'the Google' on 'the Internets', or trading A.Q. Khan a signed first draft of one of your porn novels, for some early bomb designs does not a threat make.

Using this as a justification for invading Iraq is like justifying blowing your neighbors head off because you found a blog entry on 'the Internets' that indicated he didn't like you.

...using my spidering program. I knew there was a liklihood that the shit would hit the fan, so I was able to do it in only 17 minutes. Interestingly, when I tried to access the site half an hour later, the plug was pulled. There are literally hundreds of pages that are entirely in arabic, but I haven't determined my next plan of action.

To be fair, there isn't that much imaging or charting, it's mostly text. Howevever, I will save this as evidence to use against the republican criminals who authorized this treasonous assault on our citizenry in the first place. Perhaps I can find some enterprising local Arab interpreters who will help with the translation of the pages.

I have one Arabic friend coming over tomorrow, and we will go over the documents. Now, most of the documents are kind of vague, missing text that even I can tell. There are about 20 pages with diagrams, some of which look similar to energy creation, if not nuclear then some conversion formulae.

I frankly think this is a tempest in a teapot. Looks as if the criminal republicans are milking this for all its worth.

The inabililty of these people to make responsible, ethical, decisions critical to the well-being and survival of us all as a nation is horrifying. It's also terrifying and infuriating. From the divisions and hatred here at home between Americans over their beliefs, to the danger and instability due to agression and war, their every decision has created less safety, harmony or peace.

124. Brown Statement on Unconscionable Publication of Documents that Could Help Terrorists
AMHERST - U.S. Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today released the following statement regarding troubling reports that the Senate Intelligence Committee pushed to publish materials that experts described as a "road map" for terrorists and rogue nations looking to build nuclear weapons in a failed attempt to find evidence of WMD already proven not to exist.

"Senator DeWine missed nearly half of the public Intelligence Committee meetings and failed to read the National Intelligence Estimate for nearly six months, which made me question his commitment to keeping us safe," said Brown. "The news that he did nothing to prevent the publication of information that could help terrorists create a nuclear weapon makes me question his judgment. There's nothing intelligent about posting materials on the Internet that could aid terrorists, and it's appalling that the rationale for doing so was an attempt to prove the existence of WMD that weren't there. All Americans deserve better than Senators who put partisanship and PR schemes before keeping our country safe, which is why Ohioans are going to vote for a change next week."

130. Know your BFEE: Cheney & Halliburton Sold Iran Nuke Technology

In these days when George W Bush contemplates attacking the nation of Iran, a story that we should remember:

Halliburton Sold Iranian Oil Company Key Nuclear Reactor Components, Sources Say

August 05, 2005
By: Jason Leopold
Independent Media TV

Scandal-plagued Halliburton -- the oil services company once headed by Vice President Cheney -- sold an Iranian oil development company key components for a nuclear reactor, say Halliburton sources with intimate knowledge into both companies' business dealings.

Halliburton was secretly working at the time with one of Iran 's top nuclear program officials on natural gas related projects and sold the components in April to the official's oil development company, the sources said.

SNIP…

Now comes word that Halliburton, which has a long history of flouting U.S. law by conducting business with countries the Bush administration said has ties to terrorism, was working with Cyrus Nasseri, vice chairman of the board of directors of Oriental Oil Kish, one of Iran's largest private oil companies, on oil and natural gas development projects in Tehran. Nasseri is also a key member of Iran's nuclear development team and has been negotiating Iran 's nuclear development issues with the European Union and at the International Atomic Energy Agency.

SNIP…

Nasseri was interrogated by Iranian authorities in late July for allegedly providing Halliburton with Iran 's nuclear secrets and accepting as much as $1 million in bribes from Halliburton, Iranian government officials said. During the first round of interrogations in the judiciary, a huge network of oil mafia has been exposed, according to the IPS report.

135. When NPR reported this today, they added they did this with POISON GAS Too!!!
...I think they said this happened in the spring of this or last year!

...The site was established after the Iraq Survey Group concluded that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It draws on millions of pages, most in Arabic, taken from tens of thousands of boxes of materials.

When the nuclear documents were first posted in September, groups including the International Atomic Energy Agency protested their release, saying states like Iran could use the data to further their nuclear programs.

Specifically, the information involved specific questions triggering mechanisms and firing circuits, along with ways of overcoming specific technical and engineering hurdles.

The danger of the posted data remains in dispute. But intelligence officials say they will be much more careful when the Web site comes up again.
