Molly Ivins: "May I remind you what this election is about? People, it's up to you."

Keeping Our Eyes on the Ball

by Molly Ivins

With pundits in Washington, who just a few weeks ago were claiming the Democrats would likely take the House by a razor-thin margin, now victoriously claiming they all along knew it would be a wipeout, I just feel that overconfidence juice starting to kick in. “Maybe 20 seats, maybe 40 seats” ... yeah. People could think: “So that’s settled. I don’t even really have to vote.” Folks, step up and make sure there’s some control on this regime.

May I remind you what this election is about? Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, unprecedented presidential powers, unmatched incompetence, unparalleled corruption, unwarranted eavesdropping, Katrina, Enron, Halliburton, global warming, Cheney’s secret energy task force, record oil company profits, $3 gasoline, FEMA, the Supreme Court, Diebold, Florida in 2000, Ohio in 2004, Terri Schiavo, stem cell research, golden parachutes, shrunken pensions, unavailable and expensive healthcare, habeas corpus, no weapons of mass destruction, sacrificed soldiers and Iraqi civilians, wasted billions, Taliban resurgence, expiration of the assault weapons ban, North Korea, Iran, intelligent design, Swift boat hit squads, and on and on.

This election is about that, but much more—it’s about honor, dignity and comity in this country. It’s about the Constitution, which gives us this great nation. Bush ran on a pledge of “restoring honor and integrity” to the White House. Instead, he brought us Tom DeLay, Roy Blunt, Katherine Harris, John Doolittle, Jerry Lewis, Richard Pombo, Mark Foley, Dennis Hastert, David Safavian, Jack Abramoff, Ralph Reed, Karl Rove and an illegal and immoral war in Iraq. People, it’s up to you.

5. The ENTIRE Republican Party Must Be Banned...
...and Molly has shown us that it is NOT just the regime outlaws and their cohorts at the top of the list, but the ENTIRE CULTURE OF CORRUPTION that encompasses the most despotic, terroristic organization in the entire history of the world, the republican party. It is NOT a party which represents the First Amendment-protected discussion of ideas, but as a shell which allows criminals to inject fear, hatred, and ostracization around the entire country, and the planet. Nothing short of criminalizing the existance of the republican party, through RICO enforcement, will save this country and, frankly, prevent the demise of Planet Earth. The FIRST order of business in a Democratic-controlled, aside from immediately withdrawing our troops from the Middle East, is to neutralize, investigate, indict, and impeach every republican of note in govenrnment, starting from the top down.

9. In winning one election we are becoming rather full of ourselves,
aren't we? Plus, the election has not even taken place yet and here we are strutting about how bad we are and we are going to impeach this one and that one (Oops! Impeachment is not conviction, is it?) Don't mistake winning on Tuesday for meaning that the American public is ga-ga in love with the Democratic Party. A perfect storm has converged to bring down the Republican Party a few notches (hopefully) yet they will still hold the White House for at least the next two years. We cannot count on a perfect storm for every election--the Republicans will be back.

Although there are some Democrats who are absolutely orgasmic about impeachment, Pelosi said that impeachment is off the table. If it is taken off the table the Republicans will say she lied and the Democrats lied and will bring that up in 08. Do hearings and do oversight and let that build to what it will and if that is impeachment, then Democrats can claim that it happened in the natural order of things and that they did not start their time in power going after Bush when their House leader said they would not.

Banning the Republican Party is probably a bigger Democratic wet dream than impeachment. Just because there are Republicans who piss on the Constitution doesn't mean that we should. Just because there are Republicans who paint all Democrats with the same broad brush, it does not mean that we should do the same to them. We do not need to ban the Republican Party. We need to convince the American people that our way is the better way and that they should choose us.

10. Pelosi WILL push for impeachment; Why the Criminal GOP MUST be banned
Thank you for your reply. You bring up several traps that Democrats shoud not fall for. Let me touch up on a few points:

Although there are some Democrats who are absolutely orgasmic about impeachment, Pelosi said that impeachment is off the table.

Of COURSE Nancy is not going to say that they will impeach right away. That's because we don't have the POWER yet, legally. In fact, notice that the next Speaker and President-Successor is keeping a very low-key approach to not give the criminal republicans targets to arouse their minion's rapist tendencies to bash her.

REST ASSURED, once we have the power, aside from immediately withdrawing our criminally-deployed troops to the Middle East, investigations will be TOP PRIORITY in a Pelosi house. If any representative tries to slither out of these VERY NECESSARY proceedings, then they will definitely hear the wrath of the VAST MAJORITY of all citizens in the US.

First of all, my wet dreams involve Kathy Ireland and Cheryl Tiegs. My INTENSE HATRED, though, consists of identifying criminals who have RAPED the First Amendment by corrupting a political party that, ostensibly, is an organization that allows for people to express their political views. But since Reagan, actually since Joe McCarthy, the republican party has been transformed from such a vehicle to that of a criminal organization with bigger, larger ties than the Mafia. With it's blowhard, non-democratic approach to virtually every aspect of life, Adolph Hitler could only DREAM of such omnipotence the criminal republican party exerts on the planet today!

Let's face it: When Bush, Cheney, Rove, and Rumsfeld are all impeached, indicted, and incarcerated (hopefully), we STILL will have people like George Allen, Jeb Bush, Michael Steele, and Rush Limbaugh to contend with. That is because the POLITICAL PARTY STATUS provides the indictment-free environment of "free speech. And we will have to start ALL OVER AGAIN to fight against the NEXT Bush, the NEXT Rove, the NEXT Cheney who bear the swastika of the republican regime.

As far as not needing to ban the Republican Party, that in itself is saying, "We don't need to ban Organized Crime", "We don't need to ban Crime", etc. In my opinion, we need to start looking at the available RICO statutes and start demanding such investigations into the structure of the criminal republican party.

We need to convince the American people that our way is the better way and that they should choose us.

Been there, done that. The public HAS chosen us, THREE STRAIGHT TIMES. But in ALL THREE TIMES, the vote was manipulated. Countless proofs have been shown elsewhere for me to show.

Impeached, indicted, and incarcerated. Did I miss the part where they get convicted, or an explanation as to how that might occur? If wishing only made it so.

13. Any Democratic candidate who even BREATHES the term "assault weapon"...
...seriously weakens our ability to seal the deal and take Congress back.

Sorry, Molly, you know I love you, but on this issue you are dead wrong. As a fellow Texan, you really ought to know better.
