Hacking Democracy (bittorrent video)
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 07:35 PM by Wonk
http://www.isohunt.com/download/14712136

Remember to seed to a ratio of at least 1.0, preferably 1.1 or more, after your download is complete to keep the torrent strong.

edit: Please K & R if you want more people to see this video.

7. Click the link, that opens a new page. On that page, click the download link
which downloads the .torrent file to your computer.

Then, open that .torrent file with the bittorrent client of your choice, which will start the download of the .avi file (the movie itself) to your computer.

Some popular bittorrent clients are Opera (the web browser has built in bittorrent functionality), BitTornado, BitComet, Azureus, and uTorrent. I like Azureus, but individual preferences may vary. http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

I hope that helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

It is a tad of a resource hog but has great support and is very stable. Best i've used IMO.

15. Download Azureus, install it.
When you install and set up it will ask you what level user you are, select beginer. After you have it up and running click on link above, then click "open" file. After that Az will shoot out a dialog box, click ok, then just sit back and wait.

Also it's best to create you a file just for torrents, Az will ask you for a location to download to.

Az is so easy i can use it and i have a whole 8th grade education, and thats not a Beverly Hillbillies joke either.

28. No need to convert. The file is in .avi format, which is commonly used
on Google Video and elsewhere. One relevant example is Avi Rubin's talk about the insecurities of Diebold machines at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6376169615813100061&q=.avi

BitTorrent is just a distribution system for files in any format - .mp3, .zip, .pdf, whatever. This one happens to be in .avi, which Google Video regards as perfectly acceptable.

18. Utorrent is the best
in my humble humble opinion. Why? because it is P U N Y both in file size and memory usage. And it has all the cool graphs.
Does everything Azureus does but with lightning efficiency. And you can choose which files of a multi-file set to download. And I could go on. http://www.utorrent.com/ :hi:

Hopefully someone will post this on usenet soon. BitTorrent is just a distribution system, just as ftp and html pages and usenet.

41. OK, but how do we downlowd AVI files from Usenet?
Can a newsreader do that? A browser? What software to use for uploads, an FTP client? And Usenet is vast, where do we go to upload & download?

I think we need to take advantage of every option available to get the message out there. Usenet could certainly help.

27. to download
Ok, I am kind of a beginner at this also, but have done it a few times. First install Azurus, then run it, then you click on the link in the first message - the one that starts with www.isohunt.com

I said to run the file I was downloading, and when I did it started downloading in Azurus. I did have to change some settings in my router and firewall to get the green smiley face under the Health column - I allowed the port it was using to connect to my computer in my software firewall, and then switched the setting in my router to enable upnp and then the program automatically configured my router. I think I did this right. Anyhow it's working.

47. Something's not right. Plan B?
Consider at least stopping and restarting the computer to free up more system resources (I assume you're on XP) and attempt to resume. I would probably come back to AZ later and in the meantime try one of the other BT clients mentioned in the thread like uTorrent.

In my situation, I started the download last night (using Transmission), ran my dog out to the emergency vet for an eye infection, and when we came home, we had the file. That's how things should be working for you, too.

Wish I could just give it to you through our office's FTP site but I don't have the password. . .

42. OK, I have the file. What can I do next to help?
Grabbing the video was a BREEZE with Transmission for Mac OSX! This was so much faster & easier than Bittorrent on the PC, which I've used sporadically since it was introduced.

I left my computer on overnight and so far uploaded over 1.1 gig to others who want the movie. It's still uploading now.

What else can I do with the file? If I attempt to post it to Google Video, where I already have an unused account, won't they take a few days to review the submission?

We also have several other computers we use in our studio; can each one of those be set up to upload the video to others via Bittorrent? They aren't doing anything else over the weekend!
