White House slammed for Iraq nuke website
http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2006/11/posted_by_frank.html
While the White House act of creating the web site is certainly drawing criticism from Democratic partisans, it's also being criticized by someone who is not known generally as a partisan, David Kay, the WMD expert who headed the Iraq Survey Group which the Bush administration formed to search Iraq for WMD post-invasion.

Kay was on Hardball with Chris Matthews this evening. Here's how he responded to Matthews' question about the website.
"It's sheer stupidity. Plus it's illegal. We violated our own treaty obligations in letting this out. This is clearly what is called RD--restricted data. This should not have been out there. It's highly dangerous, it's very useful--even like Iran, which is meeting some of the same technical challenges Iraq met in the Eighties. It should not have been out there. I'm absolutely convinced, and most people don't remember. But we went through this again in the spring. In the spring Congresman (Peter) Hoestra announced with (Sen.) Rick Santorum that we had found WMD in iraq. It was old mustard shells from the 1980s. They're desperate to prove a case."

If that's what someone seen as a straight-shooter like Kay is saying, you can only imagine what Democrats are saying. They have seized the chance to raise further doubts about the Bush administration's effectiveness on security issues, a Democratic group issued a press release this afternoon.
Rand Beers, President of the National Security Network, said today that, "The material posted on this website posed a grave danger to U.S. national security. We served it up for our enemies on a silver platter."

Expect to hear a lot more about the Iraqi documents website through Election Day. And if the Democrats do manage to win one or both chambers of Congress, the website will likely be the subject of congressional hearings

6. David Kay is on Tweety, "Not only was it stupid but also illegal"
Apparently the posting of this is in violation of a proliferation treaty. He also says that not only were the physics secrets posted but the engineering secrets as well. The docs apparently detailed problem Iraq had in development and the ways they got around this problem. He's really nailing them on this, and believe it or not Tweety is mostly agreeing with him..

8. Know your BFEE: Cheney & Halliburton Sold Iran Nuke Technology
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=928662&mesg_id=928662

In these days when George W Bush contemplates attacking the nation of Iran, a story that we should remember:

Halliburton Sold Iranian Oil Company Key Nuclear Reactor Components, Sources Say

August 05, 2005
By: Jason Leopold
Independent Media TV

Scandal-plagued Halliburton -- the oil services company once headed by Vice President Cheney -- sold an Iranian oil development company key components for a nuclear reactor, say Halliburton sources with intimate knowledge into both companies' business dealings.

Halliburton was secretly working at the time with one of Iran 's top nuclear program officials on natural gas related projects and sold the components in April to the official's oil development company, the sources said.

SNIP…

Now comes word that Halliburton, which has a long history of flouting U.S. law by conducting business with countries the Bush administration said has ties to terrorism, was working with Cyrus Nasseri, vice chairman of the board of directors of Oriental Oil Kish, one of Iran's largest private oil companies, on oil and natural gas development projects in Tehran. Nasseri is also a key member of Iran's nuclear development team and has been negotiating Iran 's nuclear development issues with the European Union and at the International Atomic Energy Agency.

SNIP…

Nasseri was interrogated by Iranian authorities in late July for allegedly providing Halliburton with Iran 's nuclear secrets and accepting as much as $1 million in bribes from Halliburton, Iranian government officials said. During the first round of interrogations in the judiciary, a huge network of oil mafia has been exposed, according to the IPS report.

13. *****I think this deserves a MAJOR campaign by all interested, like DU, Moveon.org, etc.*****
We have to make this own. The ONLY leg the GOP has left
is the idea that they are strong on security.
THIS BLOWS THIS IDEA OUT OF THE WATER UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY.

We have to put our collective heads together and figure
out a way to disseminate this broadly. Keith Olbermann
is doing his part. We have to start a MAJOR push.

Any ideas?

12. Umm. Wasn't this stuff already available?
I don't mean any disrespect, and I do think it was stupid of them to make such a inane blunder, but it's not like you can't get info on how to make a nuclear bomb elsewhere on-line. Heck, I remember my dad drawing it all out and explaining it one night at Big Boy on the back of his paper placemat. Of course, he'd worked in research and all, but still--it's not that hard to get.

The information that was published was very dangerous
and NOT available to published by the Bush admin.

16. Oh. So it was more specific than usually available?
I could see that. My dad did say that there were a couple of super-tricky parts that he couldn't go into, and maybe that's what was leaked?

15. All the experts I've heard talk about it say that this stuff was not public...
...not until they posted it, anyway.

Apparently, in addition to the physics, which they do teach in Universities, you need a fair amount of real-world engineering knowledge about it, most of which is not public and not found 'on the Google'.

17. My dad's an engineer.
He worked at Livermore. He said that there were some really tricky parts. If that's the stuff that leaked, then I can understand why all the experts are furious. That stuff shouldn't be out there.

in contrast to many of the other Lawrence Livermore employees, and probably even more progressive than his daughter.

26. Wait, is David Kay saying that "telling" about the website is the crime?
Didn't *ush put up some rule that it isn't the guilty party who has responsibility in these kinds of situations, but the person who tells the truth about it?

I didn't see the interview. How did it come across? That Kay was saying the website itself is illegal violating treaty laws or the after the fact revalations?
