NY-20 Sweeney loses endorsement
This story just keeps getting better and better. John Sweeney just lost his endorsement from the Post Star of Glens Falls, NY.

Serious allegations of domestic violence were raised against Congressman John Sweeney earlier this week after three newspapers published police accounts of a 911 call to his home in December.

The congressman has said he wants the truth to come out. But his actions in the wake of the incident and the disclosure of the 911 call in the media indicate otherwise.

The congressman's staff first responded to the police report on Wednesday by claiming the document was "fabricated" and "concocted" by an unnamed operative in the campaign of his opponent, Kirsten Gillibrand.

On Thursday, the congressman changed his story, admitting that there had been some kind of incident at his home that night, but that it wasn't as the police report in the media said it was.

Finally!!!

They deserve every sleepless night, it's all been TRUTH!!

4. If I were a Republican...
I'd start a new party.

Well, actually if I were a Republican, I probably wouldn't know about the subjunctive, so I'd say, "If I was a Republican..."

5. Okay, this is really weird.
On the page where my "If I were a Republican..." post came up, the Google ads are four ads for fish oil, omega-3 fish oil, and cod liver oil. And on this page where I'm posting, the ads are all for Windows firewalls. :eyes:

DUers who have donated can go to Options > Preferences > See the last choice "Display Google ads?" Select No. You have a star, so you can choose this option.

54. Thanks. I know.
I deliberately keep them on because now and then there's something interesting. Mostly I don't even notice them because I'm so used to seeing ads on the web that they're like background noise. The interesting ones tend to be in the more specialized groups, like Cooking and Baking or Photography. I figure if somebody has something that interests me and if clicking on it gets a few cents for DU too, why not? And then there are sometimes the entertaining cases like this one where something completely strange comes up.

53. They have no shame
it implies that they would have some sort of conscience and they are deficient in that area as in so many others. Notice how they all seem to be oh so upset and angry at the getting caught not for anything thing that they did. They want to know why it is exposed now not any apology for doing what evil thing that they did.

31. My friend's excellent LTTE to the Post Star, on Sweeney. It was published on 10/17.
As a longtime resident of this district, I am insulted by the lies emanating from the Sweeney camp. We should all feel insulted. They have accused his opponent, Kirsten Gillibrand, of being a war profiteer and of involvement in HUD scandals, neither of which is true.

Sweeney’s accusation of “war profiteering” against Gillibrand – a serious charge considering the cost to district families of Bush’s war -- is especially egregious. A “war profiteer” is someone who benefits from defense spending over which they have some influence. Gillibrand’s husband owns some stock in defense contractor BAE Systems as part of a retirement plan, as do a lot of Sweeney’s constituents, who, I guess, are now war profiteers in the congressman’s eyes. Had Mrs. Gillibrand been a member of Congress the last 6 years, had she also voted for Bush’s war and had BAE rewarded her for doing so, I would not quibble with the charge of “war profiteer”. But none of those three conditions applies to the Democratic candidate or her husband. All three, however, do apply to Mr. Sweeney, who received $2,000 in this election cycle alone from BAE’s PAC. His total career take from defense contractors of $49,500 buys a lot of air time with which to smear his opponent and distract voters from his own record of voting against the interests of the troops.

According to the non-partisan Disabled American Veterans organization, Sweeney has voted on their side only 13% of the time in his career and 0% in 2005, while representatives in neighboring districts can boast a 100% record for the same period.

I say to my fellow voters in this district that you can and should look all this up. Sweeney’s well-financed campaign is betting their massive ad budget that you won’t.

and I hear from everybody. But I think that anybody supporting Sweeney knows better than to contact me. But I have many replies from Sweeney, himself, both via e-mail and letters. He always replies to me and I have written him numerous times. He must be sick of hearing from me, LOL. He is actually fairly socially progressive, and is often co-sponsor of animal protection legislation, which is one of my issues, but I cannot forgive him for Florida 2000. Or for his consistent support of Bush*. The first thing I ever sent him was on the Patriot Act, which I did not support, then I found out that he was on the Homeland Security Committee. Yikes. :-(

that says how he listens to his constituants and supports whatever it was that I was writing to him about. I think that is why I got that. It could also be because I went from Independant to Democrat.

By the way, just got something in the mail yesterday and the Defenders of Wildlife gave Sweeney an F. Even went so far as to say to vote for Gillibrand.

57. I get personal replies, specially in letters.
He doesn't always support my issues, no big surprise, but tells me why he believes as he does (not that I think he's writing to me, personally), usually something about "protecting America." And I know that he is not as good on the environment as I thought, another of my issues that I contact him about. He was given an 18%, while Hillary Clinton was given 100%, when they were rated. However, he does seem to care for animals, one of my big issues, co-sponsors animal protection legislation, like the bill prohibiting slaughtering horses in this country for human consumption in Europe, which I have been supporting for almost four years. Sweeney is good, on this, co-sponsored the bill. But Hitler was also very fond of dogs. :-(

56. I actually got a letter from Mayor Bloomberg
telling me what a fine person he was and I should support him. Don't know why or how I am on his mailing list. I used to live downstate and did get an invitation to the Republican Convention in '04 (for $1500 or something like that, more if you wanted your pic with the Ghoul or someone).
I met with Sweeney's staff to discuss the privitization of Social Security and they were very nice. We received an invitation to the town hall meeting he had in Clifton Park. He never has said what what his stance is on that issue, he refuses to take one.

58. I'm not sure how I get on certain mailing lists, either.
I am on so many that I know that I didn't sign up for. But I have never gotten anything from the likes of Michael Bloomberg; mine are all liberal, LOL. And it's too bad that you couldn't have attended. He needs more of us to give him our views! :D

And Sweeney has always been very nice to me, as his staff has been when I've phoned them. People think that there's no point in contacting those they know are contrary to their views, but I think that this exactly why we should keep after them, the more, the better!:bounce:

And Sweeney always makes his views very clear, in the letters I've received, but that doesn't prevent me from contacting him. He's my rep and this is my right, and I have to be more polite than some of the letters that he must be receiving, these days...

62. I have to give him credit that he always writes back to me.
I send on my "action" e-mails, from numerous organizations, and he always writes back, usually in the form of an actual letter. I have a whole collection of them, keep them all. :-)

And he does represent all of us and I actually do think he recognizes this. I have sent him "actions" on things that I know damn well he opposes, like Iraq, LOL, but he has responded with his views, as late as last week. "Protecting America." *sigh*

I really believe that he's going down, this time, which will amaze me, since he's viewed as Jerry Soloman's successor and entirely invincible. But I really think that it's going to happen, this time. He finally has a worthy challenger that's better at this than he is...:D

Let's hope it's really nice on Tuesday too so people have no excuse to stay home. Unless they are a repuke, they really have no reason to come out to vote since the rest of the ticket is going to run away with a win.

101. Speaking of dueling signs
a friend of mine that lives on a busy corner had 2 HUGE Gillibrand signs on the corner. The Sweeney thugs came and put a sign up on his property without asking. We took it down gently and they called Sweeney's office. They told her that it was emminent domain. She told them if that was the case, Sweeney was going to have a bunch of Gillibrand signs on his property. They told her that she was taking this a bit too far.

All over a sign. They could have been nice and just came and took it away and appologize! Aaah the difference between the Dems and the Repugs!!

113. There was a case in Denver on 2004, regarding signs, that I loved.
I told you that nuxvomica was warned to bring his Gillibrand sign in at night because so many were being stolen.:grr:

In Denver, during the 2004 election, there was a Freeper and his wife who were doing just that, sneaking around at night, stealing signs that promoted Democrats. But he got caught, while attempting to steal a sign from one guy's yard, ran into the clothesline, I think, fell down and was knocked out cold in the guy's driveway, sign in hand. The guy came out and found him, called the police. His wife was still waiting for him in their van, with all the stolen signs. He did jail time for this. I loved that story...:D

Election Rarity: Paper Rescinds Endorsement

By E&P Staff

Published: November 03, 2006 12:10 AM ET

NEW YORK It takes a lot for it to happen, but as one editorial stated today, "There's a time when you have to say, enough."

Once a candidate for office gets a newspaper's nod, he or she rarely loses it -- at least for a current race. But knock your spouse around and you may be on thin ice.

That's the lesson of a rare case in New York, where the Glens Falls daily pulled back its support for Rep. John Sweeney, a Republican in a very tough re-election fight. The Albany Times-Union and New York's Daily News revealed this week that Sweeney's wife had made a 911 call summoning police because her husband was dragging her around their house. He denied it, then admitted something happened that night, promised to enable documents to be released, then refused to do that.

I figured this was unusual.

She and nuxvomica have really gotten into it, but she likes him and appreciates his intelligence, so I just don't get why she refuses to listen. My mother is not stupid and the evidence is right out there, practically in your face! Both my parents were Republicans, but I think my father wouldn't much like what is going on in this country. My grandmother woke up, after a lifetime of voting Republican, even voted against FDR. But she voted for Bill Clinton, twice! She phoned me, to tell about it and I told her that I did, too, but there was no need to tell the others... ;)

more's the pity! My Dad was a Goldwater Republican, but I do have fond memories of voting with him. He took me into the voting booth with him and let me pull the levers. Of course, he told me which levers to pull, LOL, but it still was a very good experience. :-)

And I'm very proud that my grandmother woke up in time to vote for Clinton. She voted for Reagan, which I never understood, and I'm not sure that she did, either, probably just habit. *sigh* Jimmy Carter was my president. :patriot:

Kauai to hang around my sis for awhile. I'm going back in 4 years, yay!

I looked out of the co-op where I worked today after we were closed and saw 2 guys sitting in our entranceway with a bunch of handouts and clipboards and pens. I stepped out and said..are you using our corridor?:)..with my Michael Arcuri(running for Sherwood Boehlert's seat who is a repub who retired because he was too moderate for the bushits) pin on.

They are activists who had come up from D.C., as part of a New York Unity GOTV, to handout political bills for Spitzer, Hillary, Hevesi, Cuomo on the back and Michael Arcuri's statement on the front..saying, "SEND GEORGE BUSH A MESSAGE" "If you believe our nation needs a new direction, then election day is your chance to speak."

I was Thrilled!

Edit~ I almost forgot..I asked if they've heard of DemocraticUnderground and they said, "YES"..I told them that's where I hang out to keep me sane.

And it appears that the Sweeney-Gillibrand race has also gained national attention. I mean, Bill Clinton came here!:wow: And MoveOn has taken notice and was looking for local temporary headquarters. I really think that we're going to do it, this time!

And it is also cool that the activists had heard of DU. I mention it to anyone who will listen to me. As for keeping me sane, I wouldn't have survived the 2004 election without DU. I posted a lot in their "help and support" forum...;(

Little Falls is a very nice little town. My mother was born there and grew up there. My grandparents had a small grocery store on the main street and I used to hang out there, as a kid. I loved that, especially getting my own soda out of this huge cooler that they had. For excitement, my Dad used to take us around the corner to get comic books. But the store is gone now, since the state commandeered the land to build a highway through there. :-(

88. Yet more L.S.D.
Lies, Scandal and Deny!!! In the Times Union today.

COLONIE -- The campaign of U.S. Rep. John Sweeney made clear Friday that despite his promise two days earlier, it is not providing records of a call his wife made to 911 last December, when she claimed he was attacking her.

Friday became a day of political theater for Sweeney and his supporters, with Gov. George Pataki and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Guiliani attending a rally in Clifton Park on his behalf.

Meanwhile, Sweeney has hired an attorney to investigate the source of the leaked document, which says his wife told police he was "knocking her around the house."

Three knowledgeable sources have confirmed to the Times Union that the document, which appears to be a police record of the incident and which was obtained by other news organizations, accurately reflects information contained in State Police files.
