"Obliviously on he sails"...A Calvin Trillin ode to Bush.
A heartbreaking one. I posted this a long time ago, I think. But it is more pertinent now than ever.

From the book by Trillin by that title:

Obliviously On He Sails" Trillin quote about our lost soldiers.

"A Silver-Lining View of George Bush's Not Attending Military Funerals, Lest He Become Associated With Bad News"

From December 1, 2003

At least there's no Bush eulogy
On why they had to die.
It's better that they're laid to rest
Without another lie.

Calvin Trillin.

And an excerpt about Bush's Nanny Dick:

"A SHORT HISTORY OF DICK CHENEY AS MINDER

At first, we thought we should be glad

To have a nanny for the lad—

Young Bush, who might be overawed,

Who’d barely even been abroad,

Who seemed to us a lightweight laddie

Who’d need a sitter sent by daddy.

But Cheney’s shop became the place

Where fantasists would make their case:

Iraqis threaten. At the least,

We’d rearrange the Middle East

And rule the world forevermore

If we just smashed them in a war.

Dick bought this bunk, and sold it, too.

He lied back then, and he’s not through.

He’d fooled the rubes like you and me

Who never thought that he would be

A zealot once he got installed.

Stealth Nanny’s what he should be called."

4. A Lullaby to Osama
SLEEP TIGHT
(A Lullaby Sung Each Night to Osama bin Laden)

Sleep tight. There's no one making much ado.
So sleep this night, Big O—in peace, sleep through it.
The folks you bombed now never mention you.
They're chasing down a guy who didn't do it.

Remembering a DUer named Oneighty and his silver car

Posting it just because I feel sentimental tonight about all the folks gone from DU.

6. Love love LOVE Mr. Trillin!
Buy and read all of his books, too - they're absolutely fabulous, some of my all time favorites. And I own about 3,000 books.

7. This and the HBO documentary reminded me ....
of someone else who had a way with words. We lost him at DU recently, and here is my tribute.

Oneighty and his silver car

We have lost many here. I think it will be hard to see Andy in the documentary. We have lost him, Kephra, nostamj, and Oneeighty.

Kephra loved Howard Dean, and he would be happy to see his strategy working.

8. Add brilliant insight to Hallmark rhyming doggerel and you get something
both easily accessible and truly profound. Takes a genius to get it right on both counts. Thanks, and K&R.

9. Oh, my, read his devastating Cut and Run limericks....
Just a couple of snippets about Cur and Run:

1. Vietnam

"We'd been well mired in a quag.
Our allies there were not too strong,
But Nixon left them to themselves,
And they were swamped by Vietcong.

That's cut and run. Yes, cut and run:
We left before the job was done,
And let Saigon get overrun--
A simple case of cut and run."

And about George and Texas:

4. Texas

"If sent to Nam, you might get killed.
Young Bush, to dodge his draft board's "Greetings!"
Used Daddy's clout to join the Guard,
And then finessed a year of meetings.

Talk about your cutting and running!"

And my tribute to another who had a way with words, a fellow DUers we recently lost.

Oneighty and his silver car that he might have taken round the world.

I miss him. I miss Kephra. He would have been proud of Dean's strategy and its success so far.
