A while back I went to Ford's campaign office in JC, TN to see about getting a bumper sticker. I signed up to volunteer and I was told they would call. Yesterday, they called me at home and asked about doing some work such as the phones or canvassing. I explained I've never canvassed before and the guy said that wouldn't be a problem. He asked when I would be available and I told him Saturday and Sunday for sure. No, I couldn't on Friday and I'd have to let them know about Monday and Tuesday. I wasn't sure if I was babysitting my grandchildren on those days or not. He said they would call me today to confirm everything.
He did say the race between Ford and Corker is really tight and they're pulling all the stops. Today I've heard on TV a few times that they're thinking is that Ford isn't going to win.
Is the fact that I wasn't called a bad sign? Perhaps the Ford campaign doesn't think they can win and are scaling back except in those areas that he has a better chance of getting more votes? I live in a blazing red area of TN and it's got me wondering.

1. Organizing volunteers is really complicated this late in the |
|
cycle. The person who called you was probably a volunteer - when he goes home another volunteer tries to figure out what has and has not been done. I always just show up at the headquarters. I have a van and a truck so they are always really happy to see me.

2. I'd wait until morning, and then call them and |
|
ask what they need help with, instead of waiting for them to call you. I don't think it's a bad sign; having worked on enough campaigns over the years I know just how chaotic even the most organized campaigns tend to get during the last few days heading into the election. Calls that should be made aren't made or made late, same with mailings, etc. Be proactive, don't wait for them to call you; call them and assist in whatever they need.

8. So, what happened today? |
|
Did they call you this morning, or did you end up calling them and going to the volunteer office?

3. Based on early voting totals in several states, we could see a number of |
|
states go our way that we were not expecting to get. Tenn. is still in play even though the latest polls seem to show momentum for Corker.

7. All the media attention on the "racist" ad makes some southerners dig in |
|
deeper and circle the wagons. That's exactly why the RNC did it. They know that mentality. Ford's numbers started to dip the week after that ad came out.
I hope Ford pulls it through.

10. I don't know that I would necessarily take this to be a bad sign. |
|
Depending on how long ago "a while back" is, I don't know why you weren't contacted earlier to send you out with someone who is more experienced to get your feet wet, but it could be that at this point people are getting tired and someone fresh is needed.
Our headquarters has had tremendous phone banking numbers (8,000 calls/wk) and canvassing is still being pushed along with volunteers for visibility county-wide in areas throughout the county with an emphasis on having volunteers for poll watching and visibility at every precinct in the county on election day. I'll either be at my precinct on election day or will be driving people to the polls again, or a combination of the 2.
Fret not, just get out and do what you can! I took Friday and today off to get some chores done at home before Mon. rolls around and I still feel tired! Try not to be discouraged, just do what you can and we'll have to wait to see how it all turns out!
