4 Iraqi Provinces Under 24-Hour Curfew

Saturday November 4, 2006 11:46 AM

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqi authorities are ordering cars and people off the streets
of Baghdad and three surrounding provinces on Sunday, expecting a verdict in the trial
of former leader Saddam Hussein.

A close aide to the prime minister said the 24-hour curfew covers both vehicles and
pedestrians and will run from 6:00 a.m. Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Monday.

Beyond Baghdad, it will apply to Salahuddin province, which includes Saddam's hometown
of Tikrit, and the Sunni insurgent hotbeds of Diyala and Anbar provinces.

Do the security forces even have nominal control of Anbar province,
never mind the ability to lock it down?

1. and those provinces just happen to be where most Iraqis actually live
al-Anbar is the largest province, and, of course, is where Fallujah, Ramadi, and Haditha (where teenaged Abeer was raped and murdered with her family) are located.

Those "remarkable successes" just keep getting better and better.
