VFW group passes over Iraq veteran to endorse Republican candidate

CHICAGO - Rejecting a Democratic veteran who lost her legs in Iraq, the Veterans of Foreign Wars' political action committee Friday endorsed a Republican congressional candidate with no military experience.

The endorsement of Peter Roskam in a hotly contested open seat angered some local veterans who said their posts within the 6th Congressional District were never asked whether they wanted to endorse Roskam or challenger Tammy Duckworth.

Former Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, a veteran who earned a Medal of Honor in Vietnam and lost a leg in the war, blasted the group. "They should be ashamed of themselves," Kerrey said. "They have some explaining to do to their members."

Roskam said he's not concerned about comments from nationally known veterans such as Kerrey. He said the endorsement is evidence that veterans who live in the district he hopes to serve believe he will best represent their interests.

1. VFW hates us Asians
All us gooks, chinks, slant-eyes are the yellow peril, dontcha know? Sorry, if that sounds offensive, but that's how the situation looks from behind my epicanthic folds.

2. Bob Kerrey took the words right out of my mouth
I was thinking that the VFW should be ashamed of itself, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I would surely like an explanation as to why they endorsed a Republican who likely has not served over a woman whose legs were blown off in this war.

5. Nice way to wreck an organization.
Didn't anyone tell them the GOP is in its last throes?

Disgraceful.
