Dreier spending excess funds to aid Republican campaigns

By Fred Ortega Staff Writer

For someone without much to worry about in the November election, David Dreier sure is spending a lot of money.

The senior congressman from Glendora, first elected a quarter-century ago, has a solid lead over two-time Democratic challenger Cynthia Rodriguez-Matthews in the race for the heavily Republican 26th District, according to one poll. Dreier has also maintained a squeaky clean profile amid the ethics scandals surrounding many of his GOP colleagues in the House.

Yet despite his seemingly comfortable position, Dreier has spent nearly $1.9 million this election cycle, outspending every other House incumbent in the state with the exception of embattled Congressman Richard Pombo, R-Tracy. snip

Preservation of power is likely the driving force behind Dreier's generosity, said Cerrell.

"What he wants to do is ensure that he is going to be called `Mr. Chairman' at the first of the year," said Cerrell, referring to Dreier's position at the head of the influential House Rules Committee. "He is making a lot of people indebted to him so they don't challenge his chairmanship. It is done in both political parties."

1. Just a matter of time until this POS is outed
exposed for some slimey antics, and blubbers his Swaggart/Cunningham apology on TV just before entering rehab for a drinking problem.

2. Dreier only got 54% of the vote in 2004
... and in what was once a GOP cesspit of a Congressional District. But that is all
changing now.

This is a rematch. Dreier's margin of victory was the lowest of any Congressional
race in California last cycle. Plus that "solid lead" comes from the one and only poll
taken here, and that was in early October. That he is perceived to have some sort
of lock on this one is an indication of what bullshit political coverage we get here.

We're out again this weekend knocking on doors and getting out the vote. Cynthia
is going to make a great member of Congress.

CA-26 is gonna shock the world. Trust me on this.

DAVID DREIER: THE RULES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN WHO WEAKENS THE RULES

Rules Committee Chairman Wanted To Change Ethics Rules To Make it Harder to File Complaints. House Rules Committee Chairman Republican Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) proposed to change the procedures of the Ethics Committee to make it harder to file a complaint against a member. Dreier made the proposal in 2004 after DeLay had been admonished by the House Ethics committee. (Congressional Quarterly Today, 10/8/04)

Dreier Was Chief DeLay Cheerleader In House. Republican Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) became one of Tom DeLay's chief defenders in the House of Representatives, voting for and publicly defending the rule change that would have allowed DeLay to remain in his position after being indicted. Dreier went as far as to defend DeLay after he had been admonished by the bi-partisan House Ethics Committee three times. Dreier said, "it was called an admonishment is the way it's--which is a new term which doesn't mean that he was found guilty of anything." Dreier also donated $5,000 to DeLay's legal defense fund.
