I IMPLORE YOU - IF YOU NEVER EVER READ ANOTHER POST BY ME, **PLEASE** LET THIS BE THE ONE YOU READ
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 06:59 PM by BigBearJohn

TO ALL MY FRIENDS AT DU:

The Bush Administration has just give us what could be our best chance to actually convince
our Republican (or Democratic) friends to vote their conscience and take action on Nov 7th
to protect America from harm. Can I somehow please persuade you to send an email to everyone
you know, Democrat and Republican alike, including those who might be sitting out this election,
and especially any active groups you know interested in protecting our country... and ask them
for their support.

======================================================================================================

Dear friend (Republican or Democrat),

It's often been said that it is not a good idea to discuss politics with close friends.
However, a situation has occurred that is threatening all our lives -- not as Republicans or
Democrats, but as Americans. I will break my firm rule not to talk politics just this once
because I feel it is my moral duty to try to cross partisan lines and reach out to all my FRIENDS,
regardless of political persuasion who truly love their country and want to honestly protect it
from egregious harm.

      What am I talking about?

Two weeks before the government shut down a Web site holding an archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war, scientists at an American weapons laboratory complained that papers on the site contained sensitive nuclear information, federal officials said yesterday. Two documents were quickly removed.

The Bush administration set up the Web site last March at the urging of Congressional Republicans, who said giving public access to materials from the 48,000 boxes of documents found in Iraq could increase the understanding of the danger posed by Saddam Hussein.

But among the documents posted were roughly a dozen that nuclear weapons experts said constituted a basic guide to building an atom bomb. They were accounts of Mr. Hussein’s nuclear program, which United Nations inspectors dismantled after the 1991 Persian Gulf war.

The site was shut down on Thursday night after The New York Times asked questions about the disclosure of nuclear information and complaints that experts had raised. Yesterday, federal officials said they were conducting a review to understand better how and when the warnings had originated and how the bureaucracy had responded.

On a 11/3/06 NBC broadcast, former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card confirmed the Bush
administration’s role in posting nuclear weapons secrets on a public website. Protesting the
publication of these documents, John Negraponte, Director of National Intelligence, said these
documents were being published "at some risk." As described on Wikipedia:

Operation Iraqi Freedom Documents refers to some 55,000 boxes of documents, audiotapes and videotapes that may or may not have been produced by the government of Saddam Hussein. The documents date from the 1980s through the post-Saddam period. The U.S. government seized the records after the 2003 invasion of Iraq and is releasing them on the Internet, requesting Arabic translators around the world to help in the translation. A report in the New York Times from November 3, 2006 states that the website has been taken offline because of security concerns regarding posting of sophisticated diagrams and other information regarding nuclear weapon design prior to the 1991 Persian Gulf war.

Operation Iraqi Portal gave away the keys to the atomic store and our country is CURRENTLY
being put at considerable national risk because of it.

Representative Peter Hoekstra (R) Michigan and Senator Pat Roberts (R) Kansas
originally argued for the need to publicize the documents in the hopes of leveraging the internet
to find evidence of WMD in Iraq.   "We are proposing that you immediately develop a process
to, consistent with necessary security guidelines... release these documents to the general public.
At minimum, this public assistance could 'point' the Intelligence Community to the small subset of
information that is likely to be of importance... This proposal takes risk, but we believe it is
manageable risk
"

The President himself overruled the Intelligence exerts like Negraponte who disagreed
with the House and Congress Republicans by signing an order and thus creating this website. Not only did
the administration publish dangerous nuclear secrets, but these secrets were written in Arabic, plainly
readable by any terrorist with an internet connection
. Mr. President, you say you are protecting us.
Please tell me, sir:

HOW DOES REVEALING NUCLEAR SECRETS TO THE PUBLIC STRENGTHEN HOMELAND SECURITY?

The President would not pull down the website even when the International Atomic Energy Agency
protested that the information within could help rogue states like Iran develop nuclear weapons.

It is extremely important to note that this is not the first time our country has had its nuclear secrets stolen during the
current administration. This story was reported yesterday, 11/3/06:

Drug Dealer Had U.S. Nuclear Secrets

Classified information stolen years ago from a major government-owned nuclear laboratory with a history of serious security breaches was accidentally found in a drug dealer’s mobile home.

The computer disks containing nuclear secrets belong to the nation’s leading nuclear weapons lab, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and were first reported stolen in 2004. At the time, frantic authorities closed the New Mexico facility to search for the missing disks. Days later, they claimed it was all mistake because the disks never existed.

This week the “nonexistent” classified disks surfaced during a New Mexico police department’s search of a drug-dealer’s mobile home. The man, also charged with domestic violence, got the top-secret information from a woman who is a contract employee at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

This is just the latest of many embarrassing incidents for the lab, which has seen numerous other security lapses, theft, and fraud through the years. In fact, the Energy Department has labeled the facility “a systematic management failure.” Regardless, the U.S. Government renewed the contract of the failing managers, the University of California, a few years ago for $512 million

What could possibly be more threatening to the lives of every American than
the threat of some terrorist group or rogue state getting their hands on the specific
information needed to build an atomic weapon? Again -- what could POSSIBLY be a greater
threat than this?

Can we put our difference aside just for a while and join hands to protect
America from dire harm? In my heart I know that Americans will set aside any differences
when it comes to preserving our lives. Please.... Democrats and Republicans, let's all get
together in this time of real danger to do what's best to preserve the safety of this
glorious country of ours.

I humbly and respectfully ask you this, what good will it do to continue to
allow our leaders play politics with our lives??? If the whole political chessboard is blown up,
who wins? Nobody gets to play!
? Help us end this insanity. We are better than this!
This nation has survived because of a constitutional BALANCE OF POWER. Please, for God's sake, and
the sake of our children, LET US RESTORE THE SYSTEM OF CHECKS AND BALANCES. Vote your heart.

Your friend, a loyal AMERICAN
======================================================================================================

If each of us sends out this letter (or one like it) to all our Republican friends and
convinces even one to change their vote -- it will have been worth it. I am sending this
letter to my entire address book. I pray you do too. (Gee, I don't ask for much, do I?)

Humbly submitted,
Big Bear John

p.s. It may be too long for some. Feel free to edit. I wanted you to have the facts needed to
present a viable argument. -- Love, BBJ

I doubt that it will have much effect on any Repukes of my acquaintance. Remember, these morons are actually HOPING FOR A NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST because they expect to be rescued ("raptured") just before it takes place. Therefore, the only people who will be harmed by publicizing these atomic secrets will be the "sinners" who DESERVE it. You can't speak reason to religious insanity. 22. workin round the clock here BigBearJohn, have you considered whether or not
they WANT us to be "scared" about these nuke plans? (the academic studies suggesting that Bush picks up a few points from the mere fact that people are asked to contemplate their own personal death)

they are creating quite actively the Insecurity State where we are expected to be vigilant not for freedom, but vigilant for our own security. This we can reasonably expect will tax our community time sufficiently to knock out many other competing uses for that time, like community-building. In general Dems are more community oriented and republicans more individually oriented so that anything that makes us retreat back to your shells favors Rs.

into ACTION. If the idea that our government is haphazardly releasing nuclear secrets
is not enough to make any sane person vote the government out of office, then
NOTHING WILL.

If hearing that your government is releasing nuclear secrets does NOT scare you to death,
then nothing will. I think it would be very inappropriate for a person to look at such
a revelation casually or with indifference. My point: It is appropriate to feel
scared when your life is being threatened.

23. More
When it was revealed yesterday that the internet document dump to the "Army of Davids" contained plans for building nuclear weapons in arabic, I knew that the 101st Keyboarders and Pete Hoekstra and Rick Santorum had been agitating for it for some time. I also knew that Stephen Hayes had been saying that the "proof" of Saddam's huge cache of weapons and terrorist ties was in those documents and that the braindead intelligence agencies were either incapable or were liberal hippies and could therefore, not be trusted to do it right.

What I didn't know was that George W. Bush himself considered this a personal project and specifically ordered the program.

31. A terrific post! And a very crucial point--
if it were simply that this administration had done *nothing* to keep the homeland safe, that would be negligence--but if they actively endangered this country in order to put out documents to play "cover their asses" over what nuclear info Iraq had, they're more than merely criminally negligent, more than simply bone-headed incompetents. There is one word to describe something of this magnitude of folly--and at any time in this nation's history since nuclear weapons became a reality, we would very easily be able to say that one word to describe those who would make this information accessible to those who would do us harm.

Dare we say this one word now?

42. Sorry, but I'm not going to lie and play the Chicken Little game for politics
Face it, we've been living in a nuclear insecure world for decades now. There was a kid who built a model Bomb back in the late seventies, all from publicly available sources. In virtually every serious college and university there is enough material freely available to build a bomb. A nuclear bomb is actually a relatively simple device to build, it is getting the fissionable material to put in the bomb that is the tough part.

Sorry, but I can't get alarmed, nor will I play politics with this. First of all, I find it to be a non-issue, and secondly the larger the outcry we raise over this, the larger the potential for major blowback on this one. Wen Ho Lee comes to mind, as do some other Clinton era issues. Do we need to secure Los Alamos and other nuclear facilities better, sure. But to play politics with the issue is counterproductive, and actually adds nothing towards solving this problem.

Where are the outcries to ban nuclear weapons? People think you just have to vote Tuesday for a Democrat and this will all go away? This is a major global crisis that we must face on so many levels. We had nukes under Clinton too. Hell, Truman dropped the first one! It is about time we worked as a species to rid our planet of them. However, to say it that way doesn't fire up any base. Of course, again, impeaching these bastards would be a good start, so I hope that is what the author of this post meant by restoring checks and balances, because I do think posting that information where it was goes beyond incompetence.

And it's illegal." Speaking on the posting of the nuclear info.
(Former U.N. Chief Weapons Inspector)

EDITING TO ADD BIGBEARJOHN'S TRANSCRIPT:

DAVID KAY: The dirty little secret about making a nuclear weapon is it's not physics it's mostly
engineering. Those documents describe the obstacles the Iraqiis ran into and how they
overcame those obstacles and actually putting the physics package together and
in the enrichment cycle. So, they're mostly engineering details. You don't teach that --
you learn that.

MATTHEWS: Or else check the web.

DAVID KAY: Well, this material is now out there. It was not out there before. This material is
new to the web. Much of this material I actually seized in 1991.

67. Well then
I suppose that you could call me a "nuclear expert" whatever that is. I've worked for a number of years at a nuclear facility. I know what literature is out there, freely available to people who are looking for it. And frankly, if it weren't illegal, I would be willing to wager a damn large sum of money that using only publicly available resources, I could build a bomb. Like I said earlier, an Ohio high school student did so in the late seventies. Sure, it may not have the latest detonators or fancy triggers, but it will go BOOM, and take tens of thousands of people with it. This is the price we now have to pay for letting the nuclear genie out of the bottle.

So please, calm down, take a deep breath and realize that what you're doing is playing politics with this issue. This may seem like a fine thing to do, but I also see the potential for some severe blowback, and it wouldn't be pretty. So please, stop hyperventilating, and at least admit to yourself what you're doing. This is, in many ways, a non-issue.

The point is that the information on this site, in Arabic, makes it all that much easier for a potential terrorist, who does not have the necessary training, to put together a bomb. This should not be a "political" issue either, it should scare the hell out of both Republicans and Democrats.

66. I think that having some neccessary training in physics and chem would
Be required. Putting together a bomb isn't like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. And if you do have such needed training, you are going to be able to get the information that you need from other sources, documents and books that are available freely in any decent university library.

Sorry, but this issue has become political, and lots of the outrage I see here is faux outrage. And apparently we have yet to learn the dangers of blowback from this sort of issue.

43. Incompetent or treasonous bastard, what difference does it make?
The answer is to dilute his power NOW, before he kills us all. We'll worry about the congressional procedures to remove him after the 2006 elections.

44. Is This Not Treason?
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 09:29 AM by RestoreGore
Have they not committed treason by doing this? And I will vote because I have no other choice, even though the Democratic candidate in my state voted for torture, and I doubt the Democrats will do anything to these people, because they want to keep Bush there to set it up for 2008 to really give them what they want...I hope I am pleasantly surprised. If you don't think voting for a candidate who voted with Bush on torture then goes against my conscience and heart, it does...so if I were to vote my heart, I wouldn't be voting this time. I don't know what it is to vote my heart, and haven't done so since I voted for Al Gore in 2000, and by voting this time for what I sadly now see as the lesser of two evils, I then expect to see checks and balances restored by seeing these people IMPEACHED and CONVICTED of crimes against the Constitution of this nation and against humanity. That is the ONLY way I see anything being restored for our children and a validation of my vote. Voting for Democrats alone and allowing him to continue for the next two years unabated with signing statements, edicts, and vetoes at the ready is not going to cut it, and in my mind only makes them accomplices to his crimes.

46. I think you should put things in more realistic perspective
Sure all them things you say are maybe real and true but you cannot solve the worlds problems with your single vote. It takes all of us to make the world real. No one can predict what will happen tomorrow, next week or next year but everyone, no matter who they are have the ability to take next step in making the world a better place. You don't have fix the world yourself you just need to be with people that have those ideals as achievable goals.

it isn't about this one vote. It won't all go away on Tuesday. I was actually responding to the original poster who asked us to vote our hearts. I don't know what that is anymore in this country.

You're right. This is the most important evidence I've seen yet of how dangerous the Bush administration really is. They are destroying America. There are several people I'm sending this to.

But I have to agree with those who have said here and in other threads, information on building a nuke has been available to anyone who searched for it. It's obtaining the materials and having the facilities that is the difficult part.

59. Mason-Dixon shows GOP to keep senate
Mason-Dixon has shown in the past few days a marked shift away from deomocratic canidates to republicans in Maryland, Rhode Island, and Montana. all thier polls lately have shown a discouraging trend away from the wave we hoped for. I only hope those polls are outliers.

Remember Remember the fifth of november, the gun powder treason and plot. I can think of no reason, why the gun powder treason, should ever be forgot.
