Make School Breakfasts Free for All: Study

FRIDAY, Nov. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Providing a free school breakfast to all elementary schoolchildren, regardless of family income, increases the likelihood that they'll start the day in a nutritious way, a new U.S. study finds.

The three-year study examined breakfast consumption and total daily food and nutrient intake for more than 4,300 students in grades 2 through 6 at 153 elementary schools.

The researchers compared schools that offered "universal-free" breakfast to all students, regardless of income, and schools participating in the federal government's School Breakfast Program that offers free or reduced-price breakfast for children from families with incomes below the poverty line.

1. Oh, but it costs too much.
Oh, but it frees the bad Moms of their parental duties. Even your so called liberals here have their problems with "give aways to the poor",let alone the "non needy". We're suffused with the spirit of advancing our Nation.

3. If school started at a more reasonable time, the mothers
might have a better shot at getting their kids to eat breakfast. School starts so early, so kids have to get up earlier--and if they have to take the bus any distance it's ridiculous. My daughter just wasn't hungry that early. I would pack a snack for her to eat when she could between classes, when she was hungry. At least breakfast at school would be closer to the time when the kids feel like eating.

5. And besides we need that money for more bombs and bullets to kill with.
How are we supposed to become a feared nation if we don't make the world fear us? We are going to make them too afraid of us to ever attack us again. That in a nutshell is why school breakfast will never fly. America would rather be feared than loved...

2. It depends.
It depends on the definition of "nutritious." If nutritious means "calorie-laden junk food that includes vitamins and minerals," no. If nutritious means "fresh, wholesome food cooked on-site, with no added sugars and transfats," I'm with you.

4. Why isn't the national dialogue about issues like this
instead of throwing stones at homosexuals?

10. My school already provides a free breakfast to all our kids.
It's a good program. Empty stomachs aren't conducive to learning. Of course, the child does not have to participate if he or she doesn't want to eat.
