Which States Need To Redistrict???
Thanks to Tom DeLay, one nice perk for winning State elections next week is the chance for Democrats to rearrange the Congressional map. States no longer have to wait until the next census to change the boundries. With the possibility of Democrats taking control of statehouses around the country, I'm curious what states you think should re-draw the boundries.

Now back to GOTV work...Cheers...

1. One would need State house & legislature - do have many that will
be that way after election - if the polls are correct?

4. Some States Can Do It Right Now
Illinois should retain Democrats in control of the state house and senate as well as the Governor and could redraw lines that could add areas that would turn at least two or three currently Repugnican districts blue. Different states have different rules, and I'm curious to see if this is possible in other areas. Also, to pump up the volume on the downticket races...winning the state races means control of redistricting and the voting machines.

Cheers...

6. frankly, I hope we don't.
I would rather see reform that prevents the kind of political gerrymandering that has gotten so out of wack - with the most extreme being the DeLay shenannigans - that have served to make districts almost challenger (to the incumbent) proof - except in the most extreme conditions (eg voter tidal waves that only happen every 12+ years). Certainly in this era of sophisticated computer programs - a program could be written that reapportions districts solely on population changes since the last census?

11. There's A Need For Non-Partisan Commissions...
I've long favored setting up a non-partisan commission...similar to a citizen's utility board or other non-affiliated panel that would handle both the drawing of district lines in a more equitable fashion and oversee elections...removing one party from dominating either process.

The problem is there are too many "safe seats"...lines drawn over the years that are meant to protect the incumbents. It's sad it takes such abuses of power and corruption to create this kind of wave...and if there is such a wave, Democrats need to think of how we not just ride it but to build on it.

2. Repug governors
have been in charge of over 25 states for over a decade now. Democratic governors should be a majority. We might have Democratic governors, but will we have Democratic legislatures. It takes a lot to undo Gerrymandered districts, even in a Democratic year.
Recall, part of the problem, is concentrating Democratic voters in minority districts. This has a positive and negative affect.
I'd say to assure balance we need redistrict Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, Kenturcy, Texas, Alabama, Indiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia. Texas, Florida , Michigan are the key target states.
Want fair representation for eternity, find a way to bring about proportional representation. It will cause US elections to reflect the pubic's will. Something revolutionary to the founding fathers.

8. Very True...Proportional Representation Is A Must
Unfortunately we're stuck with many districts that have been drawn by the GOOP and there's a certain degree of evening out that needs to occur first or any gains that are made on Tuesday can be built upon. In my area, I've got the boundries of 4 different Congressional districts within a 10 minute drive from my house...one carved up to protect Henry Hyde, another for Hastert, a third for Mark Kirk...the district.

Right now many states are out of whack. Look at Congressional maps from across the country and see how they've been set up to protect incumbents. IMHO the ultimate goal is to create an arbitrary, non-partisan commissions to take the hands of redistricting out of the hands of the politicians.

10. All of them, and it should be done with a nationally mandated
standard distribution, not by the politicians. Of course this will never happen.
