Cheney's nickname in the CIA: "Edgar". As in Bergen.
"The president would, by implication, be in the Charlie McCarthy role."

If you're too young to have ever heard of them, Edgar was the ventriloquist and Charley was the dummy.
But Charley had all the good lines. ;-)

I'm reading "The One Percent Doctrine", by Ron Suskind.
"Deep inside America's pursuit of it's enemies since 9/11"
I recommend it.

Also interesting..."...a realization that the American mainland is indefensible. Despite necessary and regular public assurances to the contrary, their was no senior official in the government who doubted it. When pressed, the closest anyone would come to speaking such a dispiriting truth would be to say, as Tom Ridge did at a congressional hearing, "We can set up hurdles to make their job tougher, but we can't stop them."

3. I was wondering how many would have known Charlie MacCarthy
And could Edgar Bergen's claim to current fame be that he was the father of Candace Bergen?

4. Cheney doesn't have Charlie McCarthy as a sidekick. Bush is more like the
dim Mortimer Snerd:

10. It could also reference j Edgar hoover
who ruled the FBI and Justice Departments like Attilla. He was reputed to hold all the secrects on everyone and used them to his advantage.
Big man on spying of citizens as well.
The best footnote in history I have ever heard is that JEHover was intered in a cemetary in Wash DC where people freely walk their dogs. It is reported to be a daily ritual for many people to allow their pets to shit on his grave.
