Election 2006: Races to Watch on Election Day!
This Tuesday, the midterm elections take place. This election is crucial to our country. We must NOT "stay the course" with republicans. They continue to lead us in circles with their lies and corruption. On November 7th, vote for change and a new course to follow. I have put together a small list of candidates in key states the Peace Takes Courage fully supports. VOTE!!!

Bob Casey - U.S. Senate (Pennsylvania) :
Bob Casey Jr. is the Democratic nominee who is challenging two-term Republican incumbent Rick Santorum. "Bob Casey believes Pennsylvania deserves a senator in step with the values and concerns of its citizens. And he believes this country deserves a government committed to changing the direction of the United States. As a U.S. Senator, Bob Casey will focus on creating jobs, restoring fiscal responsibility, lowering the cost of health care, improving education, safeguarding Social Security, protecting our environment, and strengthening homeland security."
http://www.bobcasey.com

Harold Ford Jr. - U.S. Senate (Tennessee) :
Harold Ford Jr. is the Democratic party's candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Majority Leader Bill Frist. Ford will be going up against Republican Bob Corker. "As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, Ford wants to make government work for all Tennesseans, not just a few. He is working to make our country independent of Middle East oil, wants a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, and is sponsoring bipartisan legislation, the ASPIRE Act, to provide an investment account for every child born in America."
http://www.fordfortennessee.com

Jim Web - U.S. Senate (Virginia) :
Webb graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was a member of the Marine Corps until 1972. Webb was an infantry officer and is highly decorated for his service in the Vietnam War. Now he is challenging Republican incumbent George Allen for a Senate seat in Virginia. "Jim Webb was born fighting. He has foughtand continues to fightto protect American values. And he will fight in the Senate to guarantee all Americans achieve their dreams. Jim understands the many challenges facing Americans today: an unpopular war, skyrocketing health care costs, a shrinking job market and rising inequality in society. Jim believes in the strength of American character and the ingenuity of the American people."

Sherrod Brown - U.S. Senate (Ohio) :
Sherrod Brown is the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate seat currently held by two-term Republican incumbent Mike DeWine. He also currently serves as a U.S. representative to the 13th congressional district of Ohio. "Sherrod opposed the War on Iraq from Day One, voting against the war authorization while working to make sure our troops get the body armor they need and the health care they deserve. He has worked to improve port security and homeland security, authoring tough new legislation that says national security must be the most important consideration in any trade agreement."
http://www.sherrodbrown.com/

Jon Tester - U.S. Senate (Montana) :
John Tester is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by incumbent Republican senator Conrad Burns, who has faced several scandals in recent months. "Jon Tester supports our troops in Iraq who have fought bravely and made us proud, but unfortunately their leaders in Washington have let them down. This administration is conducting the war in Iraq with no plan and no end in sight and has failed to give our troops the armor and equipment they need to be safe and successful. Montanans deserve a senator wholl demand the President present a clear plan to give the Iraqi military control of their own country and bring our troops home."
http://www.testerforsenate.com/

Claire McCaskill - U.S. Senate (Missouri) :
Claire McCaskill is the Democrat challenging Republican incumbent Jim Talent for a U.S. Senate seat in Missouri. McCaskill is also currently the State Auditor of Missouri. "Claire McCaskill is working hard to become a strong voice of reason in Washington. She is fighting for Missouri values by challenging Jim Talent's weak record on the issues that Missourians care about most: strong leadership when it comes to keeping our nation safe, solutions to our nation's growing energy crisis, quality healthcare for all, and accountability to the people they serve."
http://claireonline.com

Jim Pederson - U.S. Senate (Arizona) :
Jim Pederson is the Democratic nominee for a Senate seat in Arizona. Pederson will be facing Jon Kyl, the Republican incumbent who is running for a third term in the Senate. "We need a new direction in Iraq, and we won't get one with Jon Kyl in the Senate. The Bush administration has mishandled the Iraq war - the pre-war intelligence and post-war planning, cost and troop estimates and the rebuilding process. The list goes on. But Kyl has never asked a question, and he's voted time after time against holding the administration accountable."
http://www.pederson2006.com

Patrick Murphy - House District 8 (Pennsylvania) :
Patrick Murphy is an Iraq War veteran and former West Point professor. Now he is running against Republican incumbent Mike Fitzpatrick in the House election for Pennsylvania's 8th congressional district. "When I am elected, I will fight every single day for working families, to support our troops and veterans, and to protect our constitutional rights. I will bring integrity, a sense of urgency, compassion, and vision that I have honed throughout my life. I am not one to sit back and complain. I will bring fresh ideas to solve our nation's challenges."
http://www.murphy06.net

Tammy Duckworth - House District 6 (Illinios) :
While serving her country in Iraq, Tammy lost both of her legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq. After coming home and recuperating at Walter Reed hospital, she decided to run for for Congress. "We need to face up to our tough challenges when it comes to creating jobs, providing a quality education for our kids and making affordable health care accessible to all. And when it comes to making decisions about sending our young people to war, we need strong voices in Congress who understand the consequences of those decisions. I'm ready to go to Washington to provide new leadership and face up to the tough choices that confront us."
http://www.duckworthforcongress.com

John Laesch - House District 14 (Illinois) :
John Laesch is the Democratic candidate for US Representative of the 14th District of Illinois. He is running against Republican incumbent Dennis Hastert, the Speaker of the House. "Johns commitment to truth and Democracy has led him to challenge the current Speaker of the House, J. Dennis Hastert in the 2006 election. As your Congressman, John will work toward ending the War in Iraq, bringing our heroes home and allowing International peace-keepers to resolve the ongoing civil war."
http://www.john06.com

Charles Brown - House District 4 (California) :
Charles Brown is a retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel and Democratic candidate for Congress in California's 4th congressional district. He is challenging Republican incumbent John Doolittle, who faces an ongoing federal investigation into congressional corruption scandals. "I want to be a part of a return to integrity, honesty and accountability in Congress. As a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, I still believe in its honor code: "We will not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do." It is shameful that a majority of voters do not trust their elected representatives and view politicians negatively."
http://www.charliebrownforcongress.org

Jerry McNerney - House District 11 (California) :
Jerry McNerney is the Democratic nominee in California's 11th congressional district for the U.S. House of Representatives. He is challenging Republican incumbant Richard Pombo, who has ties to the Abramoff scandal. "As an engineer and energy specialist, Jerry would bring a unique and critical perspective to Congress. Jerry's signature issue will be clean energy, and he is determined to help guide and direct our nation to a sustainable energy policy that will provide the basis for a healthy, prosperous, and secure economy for future generations."
http://www.jerrymcnerney.org

Christine Jennings - House District 13 (Florida) :
Christine Jennings is the Democratic nominee for United States Congress in Florida's 13th congressional district. "I'm running for Congress because the only way to change Washington is to change the people we send there. Ill use my experience in the banking industry to restore accountability in Washington, to fight for a balanced budget, and to help people improve their lives. I will fight every day to bring fiscal accountability to our government, so that everyone has the chance to achieve the American Dream."
http://www.christinejenningsforcongress.com/

Tim Mahoney - House District 16 (Florida) :
Tim Mahoney is running for the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat in Florida's 16th Congressional district. "By voting for me as your next Congressman, you will send a message to the nation that you are tired of corruption and cronyism and want a leader who has the vision and competence to solve tough problems."
http://timmahoneyforflorida.com

Ron Klein - House District 22 (Florida) :
Rob Klein is the Democratic candidate in Florida's 22nd congressional district, running against 12-term Republican incumbent E. Clay Shaw. He is currently the Florida Senate minority leader. "Solutions to our toughest challenges lie in a common sense approach that promotes fairness and justice. I know, as so many of you do, that we can and must do better. It is time for a change in Washington. The people of Floridas 22nd District deserve an independent, honest, energetic voice in the United States Congress."
http://www.ronklein2006.com

Joe Donnelly - House District 2 (Indiana) :
Joe Donnelly is running as a Democrat for Congress in Indiana's Second Congressional District against the Republican incumbent, Chris Chocola. "A respected businessman and community activist, Joe decided to run for Congress because he felt the politicians in Washington were not living up to Hoosier values. His campaign is based on his strong moral convictions and his abiding commitment to better jobs, healthcare, and education."
http://www.donnellyforuscongress.com

Brad Ellsworth - House District 8 (Indiana) :
Brad Ellsworth is the Vanderburgh County, Indiana, Sheriff and now the Democratic nominee for the United States House of Representatives in the 8th District of Indiana. Ellsworth will be facing off with Republican incumbent, John Hostettler. "Today, Im running for Congress because I believe Washington has stopped listening. Im a Sheriff, not a politician. I believe that Washington is letting us down. Im running for Congress because I believe that Washington doesnt listen to things we need as a community. Im running for Congress because I believe that Washington doesnt hear what we need as families. Im running for Congress because I believe a;; children deserve the opportunity to grow up safe and secure."
http://www.ellsworthforcongress.com

Baron Hill - House District 9 (Indiana) :
Baron Hill is the Democratic Party's nominee in the congressional election for the 9th District of Indiana, running to take back the seat he lost in 2004. "In the last two years, our country and Indiana have gotten seriously off on the wrong track. Our leaders are listening to the big and powerful special interests, and not the people. They've made decisions that make you scratch your head. That is why we need to Bring Baron Hill Back to Congress."
http://www.baron2006.com

Ken Lucas - House District 4 (Kentucky) :
Andrew Duck is the Iraq war veteran and Democratic candidate seeking to represent Maryland's 6th congressional district against Republican incumbent Roscoe Bartlett. Though Maryland's 6th district is the state's most conservative and most reliably Republican, Duck has found supporters and some observers have claimed an upset is possible. "I served in Iraq in 2003 and have seen first hand the policies in place there. The President has insisted we must "stay the course until we achieve victory." This course does not lead to victory, only failure. We must change course now!"
http://www.duckforcongress.org

James Marcinkowski - House District 8 (Michigan) :
James Marcinkowski is a former CIA case officer and now a candidate for the United States House of Representatives, in Michigan's 8th Congressional District. He is one of the former CIA agents who has spoken about the consequences of the Plame affair. "I want to represent the people of the 8th Congressional District in the United States Congress because I believe that the values of the American middle class are under attack by our current administration. My parents generation worked and fought hard to hand down the values and opportunities that would enable us to have a strong middle class we could be proud of. Congress is attacking what my parents and many others like them fought hard to give us. This needs to change. We need to change it."
http://www.vote-jim.com

Duane Burghard - House District 9 (Missouri) :
Duane Burghard is running against Republican incumbent Kenny Hulshof for Missouri's 9th congressional district. "As your representative I will bring fiscal responsibility, guard our liberties, bring genuine progress in the pursuit of alternative energy sources and serve as a neccessary "check and balance" in defense of our values. I reject the notion that there is a Red America or a Blue America. As your Representative I will show that there is one America, and that we must treat those with whom we disagree as we ourselves wish to be treated. You will find me working hard with Republicans and Democrats to solve the problems we face, and doing so in a way which will restore dignity to our government and your confidence in it."
http://www.burghardforcongress.com/

Linda Stender - House District 22 (New Jersey) :
Linda Stender is the Democratic Party nominee for New Jersey's 7th congressional district, where she will face off against Republican incumbent Mike Ferguson. "Linda Stender supports our troops and wants to bring them home safely. Linda Stender, like most Americans, disagreed with President Bushs decision to go to war with Iraq. In Congress, Linda will fight for proper equipment for our soldiers to keep them safe. She will demand accountability from the Pentagon and the Administration, so that our taxpayer dollars are not being wasted. Linda will also push the President for an exit strategy, one that safely phases troops out of Iraq, and a plan to bring American soldiers home from Iraq within one year."
http://www.lindastenderforcongress.com

Mary Jo Kilroy - House District 15 (Ohio) :
Mary Jo Kilroy is the Democratic candidate in the race for Ohio's 15th District of the U.S. House of Representatives. Kilroy is facing off with Republican incumbent Deborah Pryce. "Mary Jo is running for Congress because its time for a change. She believes that Central Ohio deserves a representative in Congress who'll be an independent voice standing up to the Bush administration, fighting for Ohio values in Washington. Mary Jo will fight to restore fiscal sanity to the Federal budget, fix the Medicare prescription drug benefit, and honor our men and women in uniform and their dependents, whether on active duty, in the Guard and Reserve or as Veterans."
http://www.kilroyforcongress.com

Zack Space - House District 18 (Ohio) :
Zack Space is running for the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in Ohio's 18th congressional district, currently held by Republican Bob Ney, who recently pled guilty to conspiracy and making false statements in relation to the Abramoff scandal. "Lets Clean Up Congress! Our government in Washington, DC is broken. Politicians and their lobbyist friends are looking out for themselves at the expense of Ohio families. As your Congressman, Zack Space will accept no gifts, trips, or meals from lobbyists and will never put corporate interests ahead of working families."
http://www.zackspace.org/

Peter Welch - House (Vermont) :
Peter Welch is the Democratic candidate running for Vermont's at-large U.S. House seat being vacated by Bernie Sanders. "Peter Welch, Democratic candidate for Vermont's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, has had a distinguished career as a legislative leader, lawyer, and advocate for the underrepresented. His record of accomplishment reflects his commitment to bringing people together to find real solutions to the difficult challenges we face and making government work for all citizens."

1. Might I also add NY 26:
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 06:17 PM by Earth_First
New York's 26th congressional district— Incumbent Thomas M. Reynolds (R), the National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman, faces a rematch with local industrialist and Marine Veteran Jack Davis. While the district leans substantially Republican, Reynolds was held to 55% of the vote in 2004 by political neophyte Davis, who has used the intervening time to build a political base. He will campaign against Reynolds' support of free-trade, which he claims has cost the district thousands of well-paying jobs. Reynolds is one of the Republican party's premiere fund-raisers, but Davis is independently wealthy, vowing to spend up to $2 million on his campaign. Reynolds held a small lead in the polls until the Mark Foley scandal broke at the end of September. Reynolds had some knowledge of Foley's emails, and his chief of staff, Kirk Fordham, formerly Foley's chief of staff, was more directly involved. A November 3rd SurveyUSA poll has Reynolds leading Davis 50% to 46% with 4% undecided. In the space of just a week CQPolitics changed their rating from Safe Republican, to Leans Republican, and then again to Leans Democratic.

8. look also at the NY 19th, where John Hall is about to unseat . . .
six-term BushCo toady Sue Kelly . . . it's a Republican district, and Kelly has WAY more money (86% from PACs), but John has thousands of small contributions, hundreds of volunteers, endorsements from ALL the major papers in the district (plus the NY Times), and some serious momentum . . .

some folks are still saying it will be a close election . . . from what I've seen and heard, I think that Sue Kelly may be bounced out of OUR House rather convincingly come Tuesday . . .

yet another unexpected pick-up for the Dems . . .

Nancy Boyda - House District 2 (Kansas):
CQPolitics.com has changed its rating on the race in Kansas’ 2nd District to Republican Favored from Safe Republican. The switch signifies an analysis that five-term Republican Rep. Jim Ryun remains very likely to win, but an upset by Democratic nominee Nancy Boyda can no longer be completely ruled out.

7. We have several competitive House races in New York
... all are winnable.

The hottest race is New York 20 — Kirsten Gillibrand(D) John E. Sweeney (R)

Sweeney is a poster boy for slimy republicans - Miami Election Riot, Abramoff, Marianas, wife beating (wives #1 AND #2)- he must go.

Democrats are giving Sweeney his first real test after representing the modestly GOP-leaning northern Hudson Valley since 1999. Lawyer Kirsten Gillibrand has raised ample funds and has been relentlessly trying to tie him to Republican ethics problems, from poking at his ski trip with lobbyists to raising questions about his driving record. Sweeney emphasizes funds he has delivered for the district and issues on which he has differed from Bush. Turnout could be challenging in a year when the Democrats are poised to romp in races for Senate and governor.

New York 24 — Michael Arcuri (D) Raymond Meier (R)

In this upstate district with a close partisan split, Democrat Michael Arcuri, the district attorney in a Republican-leaning county, has taken a two-part approach to the Republican Raymond Meier: pointing out those of Meier’s views that are more conservative than Boehlert’s, especially on social issues, while accusing the GOP nominee of being fiscally reckless as a state senator.

New York 26 — Jack Davis (D) Thomas M. Reynolds (R)

Although he drew the same Democrat, factory owner Jack Davis, whom he held to a subpar showing in 2004, Reynolds looked safe enough to tend to his role as chairman of the House GOP campaign arm ó until he incurred collateral damage from the Mark Foley scandal. Reynolds received information about Foley's e-mails to pages long before the public knew, and he faced fire about whether he had asked enough critical questions about the details. Now his hope hinges on the matter fading altogether by Nov. 7.

New York 19 — John Hall (D) Sue W. Kelly (R)

Democrats are trying to unravel Kelly’s image as a centrist Republican in a district where affection for Bush may have declined since he took 53 percent in 2004. Their nominee, John Hall, is a longtime local Democratic activist who has run an energetic campaign — but his best asset is publicity from his rock-star past as a member of the 1970s band Orleans.

New York 29 — Eric Massa (D) John R. “Randy” Kuhl Jr. (R)

In what’s arguably the state’s most Republican district, freshman Kuhl is under attack by Democrats for being more conservative than the state’s Southern Tier is used to. Democrat Eric Massa, a Navy veteran and former Pentagon aide, has overcome inexperience to make an impressive fundraising showing.

Thanks Ava! :yourock:
