Poll shows Shaw trailing Klein in U.S. House race

Veteran U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw trails his Democratic challenger by 10 points in a Miami Herald poll that underscores the difficulties Republicans face as they try to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives amid increasing voter unrest.

The poll of 401 likely voters in one of the hottest congressional races in the country shows that the war in Iraq is a major factor in how people will vote. That's a problem for Shaw, who voted for the war and has labored to distance himself from President Bush.

Republicans have sought to keep the congressional races focused locally, but the survey results suggest that Tuesday's election has ''morphed into a referendum on President Bush and the war on Iraq,'' said pollster John Zogby, who conducted the survey for The Miami Herald.

The poll, conducted Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, carries a margin of error of 5 percentage points. The survey shows state Rep. Ron Klein leading Shaw 49.2 percent to 39.6 percent, with 6 percent of voters undecided.

3. he beat Elaine Bloom
in 2000 by like 500 votes in this district. Then the republican legislature rewrote the district to get rid of heavy democrat areas in North Dade and added more republican areas in Palm Beach County. But I think this is the year he finally goes down. The district voted for Kerry over Bush in 2004. It's very hard to gerrymander much in South Florida. It's extremely heavily dem territory.

2. His luck just might have finally run out
He might have gotten lucky in this district in all those other elections, but with this anti-Republican environment I think it's all over for him now.

6. what a riot
Shaw is one of the less repulsive Republicans out there, so the folks in Florida must really be mad. Course saying Shaw is one of the less repulsive ones is like saying he's only a little dog turd compared to the steaming piles of horse puckey that make up the Republican membership of Congress
