Undercut Democracy: Voting Machine Hack
November 05, 2006 01:00 PM EST
by Grant Swank

"’Diebold has made the testing and certification process practically irrelevant,’ said Open Voting Foundation president, Alan Dechert. ‘If you have access to these machines and you want to rig an election, anything is possible with the Diebold TS - and it could be done without leaving a trace. All you need is a screwdriver.’"

The problem has been known for six years. Just now it is getting media play. Why the delay?

Our voting process in this republic could be a mist. This democracy could be had in an Election Day. Per John Leyden in "Diebold voting machine hack exposed," Diebold’s electronic voting technology could be flawed. We the voting citizens could be going through the motions of freedom to vote without realizing that our movements are really adding up to nothing.

<snip>

"Open Voting found that by toggling a single switch it's possible to get Diebold's AccuVote TS touchscreen voting machine to boot from an unverified external flash drive instead of the device's built-in firmware, which is stored on an EPROM chip." Anybody interested in undermining next Tuesday’s votes?

5. Hey-- WELCOME to DU!!
Yes, sounds like laying some groundwork for fraud claims.

Here's another one in the news recently.

State GOP: Missing voting machine cards in Memphis could be used fraudulently

Associated Press

MEMPHIS — Tennessee's Republican Party chairman complained to Shelby County election officials that electronic voting machine cards were missing in Memphis, the hometown of Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Harold Ford Jr.

"It has come to our attention that several smart cards used in early voting are missing from at least one early voting site in Memphis, Tenn.," Bob Davis Jr. said in a letter dated Thursday. "The lack of oversight and control over these smart cards has created a situation which could allow for voter fraud."

The letter called on the commission to "locate these missing smart cards as soon as possible."
