I'm watching "The Battle for Rome" on the Discovery channel. The Roman Senate finally get's the cojones to declare the God and Emperor Nero an "enemy of the state", an act that leads to his suicide and a change in how emperors were selected.
There were a lot of little interesting tidbits on how Rome, a Republic, was neo-conned into a totalitarian empire by the elitist patricians who stood to lose some land and money in the face of reforms for the common plebians.
I'm surprised the lately religious Discovery Channel and conservative enablers would air something that sort of rings true for us on the left here in our Constitutional crises in the USA.
But I thought the fact that the Roman Senate, reduced to a rubber stamp for the emperors and patrician interests, actually were able to get the "enemy of the state" thing passed in spite of the authoritarian power the emperors had acquired under Augustus.
I'm wondering when our Senate is going to realize their duty?
