"(C)ataclysmic fight to the death" - WH strategist YIKES
http://select.nytimes.com/2006/11/06/opinion/06krugman.html
<snip>

a White House strategist has already told Time magazine that the administration plans a “cataclysmic fight to the death” if Democrats in Congress try to exercise their right to issue subpoenas — which is one heck of a metaphor, given Mr. Bush’s history of getting American service members trapped in cataclysmic fights where the deaths are anything but metaphors.
<snip>

Those 5 words by the "White House strategist" sent chills up my spine. Never once do I remember the old Nixon gang saying anything even remotely this belligerent. Yea, it might all be BS hot air, but still. And no, I'm no concern troll, been here over 2 years now. What in the hell would Congress do if Bush just said FU ? Even to the Supreme Court ? Ok, now I'm getting passionate but I can see them stalling as long as they can before the Federal Marshals storm the White House. I sure as hell hope we don't have to go through show downs like that.
Damn, I hate that phrase in the subject line.

2. I have been saying for some time
I don't think anything is beyond these people. And no I am not suggesting one does not vote, I have never understood that position anyway, I vote even if I know it is a lost cause because it is my civic obligation, but, back to the point, I just don't see these people giving up control of the government.

So the White House resorts once again to playground tactics and bully-speak.

Gawd, I so want the grownups in charge again.

Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 01:15 AM by kestrel91316
they will refuse to vacate their offices??? Real cute stunt. It'll get them arrested and marched off to a DC jail.

Hey. I could go for that.

Sic semper tyrannis, dudes.

9. we're dealing with the worst kind of criminals here . . .
these are truly bad guys . . .

they've already committed crimes against humanity that have killed hundreds of thousands, and that will likely kill hundreds of thousands more . . .

they are itching to attack Iran, or Korea, or wherever it is they can most efficiently start their next war . . .

and they treat the weapons of mass destruction they control as their personal toys that they really, REALLY want to play with . . .

these are very dangerous criminals -- potentially the most dangerous ever . . . they must be stopped . . .

10. What could they possibly be worried about?
Ignoring 9/11 warnngs and 3000 Americans dying?
Anthrax terror attack?
No OBL?
Lying about the causus belli for invading Iraq (see Cheney secret energy meetings)
Katrina mismanagement?
$4.5TT added debt?

Geesh, these are hardly major things that matter. Not like they lied about something really important....like a blowjob. Why would they be getting defensive?

11. Cheney has already said he would probably ignore a subpoena
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2929731

You don't say something that arrogant unless you believe you're above the law and can get away with it.

The one thing the Dems MUST do is start enforcing the law again, and if that means putting a warrant out on Darth and arresting him for failing to appear then so be it. They're going to have to find the stomach to uphold the rule of law even as BushCo inevitably turn it into a melodrama of unprecedented proportions.

15. Cheney does have a point and I agree with him
Congress can't subpoena the president or vice president to force them to appear before hearings. They're constitutional officers and it just violates basic separation of powers. However, as has happened before, there can be negotiations where some ad hoc agreement is reached for voluntary appearances, as has also happened before with Bush, Cheney, Clinton, and Ford. But this only applies to the president and vice president. Any other advisor, cabinet head, or administration member on down can be subpoenaed, and under Clinton practically was.

22. Congress can't, but an independent prosecutor can
But perhaps that isn't the way to go. At least not until they're out of office, when they no longer have immunity. In the meantime, there's more than enough evidence to begin impeachment investigations, and if they refuse to cooperate they do themselves no favor. Most Americans are already disgusted enough with them both to see such a refusal as nothing but more proof of their criminality.

17. Why Do We Spin These Fantastic Tales?
Most presidents assert executive privilege...Reagan did...Nixon did...Clinton did...

It's up to the federal courts to reject or embrace their claims...

Don't forget the Supreme Court full of his own appointees rejected Nixon's claims of executive privilege when he refused to hand over the White House tapes...

Wake me up when Bu$h refuses a Supreme Court demand...

Of Cheney's meeting with the energy companies. I imagine they'll do the same thing with every single investigation launched.

But that's okay because they'll just kill the Repubican Party permanently and that's a very good thing.

23. They fear "We, the People". The first three words of the Preamble
to the constitution.

After Pearl Harbor, Admiral Yamamoto had this to say,“I fear all we have done is to awaken a slumbering giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” That's probably how the cabal is feeling right now.

The giant is "We, the people" and the cabal cannot get him back to sleep.

It's time to GOTV and see what shakes out. MKJ

31. Sounds Like A Cheney-ism to me....
... it has to be a fight to the death. If they are revealed, everything they hold dear will be taken from them. "Prison is for the little people...", not them --according to their way of thinking. Take away their money, and they are like everyone else --subject to exploitation. Can't have that.

32. NOTHING short of impeachment will stop them -- How much clearer. . .
. . .does it have to be before the Democratic establishment says to hell with their self-imposed "Impeachment is off limits" edict??

Bush and Cheney will stop at nothing to gather evermore Uncontitutional power. They have proven it so many times, I don't know if they CAN make it any clearer.

Wake Up DEMS!! (Or be ready to take the revised oath -- changes mandated by "Pelosi's Pledge")

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and be derelict in my duty to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear foreswear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will fail to take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully negligently and faithlessly discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
