This afternoon I listened to fundies reviewing the voter guides
they received in church this morning - and discussing Haggard. We have a mutual friend visiting who works for a humanitarian organization in another country. I bummed a copy of the voter guide for later review - and score keeping as results are reported. Haggard was roundly roasted. So were a number of puke candidates. I live in the armpit of the Bible belt. These were the super wingnut word of faith prosperity gospel tongue talking variety of fundies. I am hopeful. Assuming the votes are counted accurately, of course. It would seem that at least some of the sheeple are going to assert at least a tiny bit of independence and rebel against their keepers when they enter the voting booth....

13. Are you sure about that?
General John Sullivan died in 1795.

Still have the page up on my PC. The addy shows:

5. Actually I live in Indiana but your description fits it perfectly.
I noticed in the 04 election the polls closed at 7:00 and at 7:01 IN was being called for Bush, we were the first state in the election called. I don't think this state has ever put a Democratic president in.

10. They get around the law by not saying...
..."Vote for Smith."

Instead, the voter guides say Jones is for "partial birth abortion," and Smith is against "partial birth abortion."

11. Best I can tell
they are able to get around it because they do not EXPLICITLY endorse candidates. The endorsement is IMPLIED not stated and is usually based on the conservative fundamentalist political issues (abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research, etc.).

Personally, I think this is a legal issue that is set for future review at some point in time. Just think what an implied threat will get you.

12. They don't tell you who to vote for
Well, not explicitly. They don't say "vote for candidate A", which would be illegal. The voter guides print the candidates "positions on the issues", or at least the issues which would persuade someone to vote the way the people putting out the guide want them to vote. It looks like this:

"Candidate A is a saint"
"Candidate B is a Commie, Nazi, puppy-kicking traitor"
"But we're not going to endorse either candidate, make up your own mind."

That's how they get away with it.
