neo cons trying to interfere with Scottish independence

US consul questions wisdom of Scottish independence

THE US government has made a dramatic intervention into Scottish politics after a senior diplomat said the Bush administration would “probably” prefer independence not to happen.
Lisa Vickers, the new US consul in Scotland, questioned the effect of separation on American energy firms and criticised the SNP’s anti-Nato policy. She also speculated about whether an independent Scotland would become a member of the European Union.

The official’s comments are controversial because independence looks set to be one of the key issues during next year’s Holyrood election campaign.

An opinion poll last week found a majority of Scots favoured breaking up Britain and revealed the SNP was ahead in the popular vote.

1. Why in the world
are we commenting about an internal UK debate like Scottish independence? :eyes:

Sorry, UK DUers, hopefully we will get to curtail this moron tomorrow.

2. Hey, maybe we should just invade them!

Come on, don't you wonder if there is someone inside the * cabal that thinks invading Scotland would be a great idea?

6. Tony Blair is, on paper, a Scot.
He was born in Edinburgh, and his mother was Scottish.

16. Yes, but he downplays his Scottish roots.
It's his colleague and rival Gordon who's seen as the Real Scot.

17. Did you see "The Deal"?
There was a very entertaining scene when Blair and Brown are sharing a cramped office early in their respective careers. Eager to befriend his somewhat dour new colleague, Blair squeaks, in perfect Islington, "I'm a Scot!"

The look on Brown's face was priceless.

3. I was in Scotland two years ago and they were begging for people to move there.
It's a very pretty place, but as I told them, with the conversion rate between the American dollar and the British pound, I couldn't live there unless they became independent and accepted the Euro.

5. COL in Scotland is rather expensive
I wouldn't mind living there for a while either, but sheesh, you need a gold mine to finance it.

14. I'd move there if I could
Just don't know how to emigrate, pay for it, what I'd do once I got there to earn a living. When I visited Scotland, the B & B I stayed in was run by a young couple who worked three jobs between the two of them and pulled in about $30,000 a year (this included the income from the B & B.) I'm afraid the only way I could do it would be if I won the lottery here . . . My great great great grandfather emigrated to Canada from Perthshire, the Scottish heritage in my family is still going strong.

Good god, is there no limit to their idiocy? How the hell do they think we have any right to say anything about Scotland?

Of course! How could I forget the North Sea Oil? That makes everything clear.

Assholes. Let's invade Scotland for their access to oil.

There it is!

Dear Scotland: Please ignore anything this administration says. Feel free to give them the finger. Thank you.

9. The Neocons are late. Scotland is running out of oil.
Plenty of cooking oil, though.

On a quibble with this news story - it would take a helluva lot of bunker busters to "break up Britain", as it's a large slab of Jurassic-era rock on a bed of basalt and granite, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. I think the article means that the Scots favour leaving the United Kingdom.

15. WHAT RIGHT DOES THE US CONSUL HAVE TO INTERVENE?
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 12:40 PM by LeftishBrit
Are the Bushies going to invade Scotland next? Perhaps Tony has asked them to - "Pssst, I think Gordon Broon is hiding weapons of mass destruction! Capture him, and let me stay in power for life!" (By the way, that's sarcasm on my part!)

And by the way, I don't favour total Scottish independence. But this interference is ridiculous!
