Texas Gov. Rick Perry: Non-Christians are condemned to spend eternity in hell
Texas governor's religious remarks slammed

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry has drawn criticism from rival candidates for saying he agrees non-Christians are condemned to spend eternity in hell.

Perry was among some 60 mostly Republican candidates for Tuesday's midterm election attending a Sunday service at San Antonio's Cornerstone Church, where pastor John Hagee said in his sermon non-Christians were "going straight to hell with a non-stop ticket," The Dallas Morning News reported. Afterward, Perry told reporters there was nothing in the sermon he could disagree with, prompting quick condemnations from opponents.

"He doesn't think very differently from the Taliban, does he?" said independent candidate Kinky Friedman. "Being obsessed with who's going to heaven and who's going to hell is kind of a pathetic waste of time."

Democrat Chris Bell said a state leader should have been more cautious in his remarks. "God is the only one who can make the decision as to who gets into the kingdom of heaven," Bell said.

43. Perry will not go to hell. Perry will go to purgatory and have to answer
to Alex Trebek who will give Perry every clue and Perry will have to answer in the form of a question from now to the crack of doom.

Of Course Alex Trebek will give his clues from Heaven.

24. Would that it be true
Unfortunately, Texes is deep Bible Belt country. It's just about impossible to win without proclaiming your Christian credentials.

A statement like "All non-Christians are going to hell" is a very safe thing to say.

To his credit, as Dubya's hand-picked successor, Perry is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer. He probably wasn't even paying attention.

12. Most Christians probably believe that.
I'm not sure why it even made the news. It's no different to me than someone believing that Mother Earth made them, or that they'll be reincarnated when they die. It's not provable, it's in the realm of religion, so why is it offensive to anyone?

I think George Carlin originally said that. Sounds good to me.

Perry has too much pride. He believes all others are going to hell, but Jesus will be throwing roses at Perry's feet when he arrives at the Pearly Gates. Ha!

37. Perry knows exactly what he is doing. Playing to his base
It's a three way race, and all Perry has to do is get his hardcore base out to win. Kinky is stealing some of the liberal vote from Bell (I know he ain't liberal, but he's still getting their votes), and most of those moderates angry at Perry are going to Grandma. Perry is very shrewed, and quite ruthless.

41. Not any different from the Taliban, or the "good" Germans who went along with Hitler
Pastor John Hagee said in his sermon non-Christians were "going straight to hell with a non-stop ticket"

Many "good" Christians believe and accept that, because that is what the Bible teaches, and the Bible is the absolute "word of God", not to be questioned. They have been taught that probably since childhood, and by many evangelists and preachers.

Just like many "good" Germans believed and accepted that they were the master race, and certain groups of people were worthy only of being slaves, or (in the case of the Jews) being exterminated, because Hitler said so, and they accepted him as their Fuhrer.

It is not much of a leap from believing that non-Christians are headed for hell, and that this is the just will of God, to believing that some groups of people (Jews, gays, etc.) are the epitome of evil, and that the world ought to be rid of them, and to regard it as one's right and duty to do whatever one can to, at best, making this present life very miserable for such people.

As Voltaire said, as long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities.

46. He's such a jerk
The fact that such a comment wouldn't offend the majority of the voters in this state is the sad part. In fact, I wouldn't be that surprised if such a comment was strategically timed on his part. He's basically just counting on getting his fundie base to win this election; those are the only people in this state supporting him at this point. Sadly, that is probably all it will take for him to be re-elected and become the longest-serving governor in Texas history.

(I'll be voting for Bell today, though, and hoping for the best!)

50. I like Kinky Friedman.
Of course, since I have no leg in that election, I know little about what his platform is or whether I would actually vote for him or not. But, I think he's a "tell it as it is" kind of guy, and I appreciate that about him.

As for whether one believes everyone who isn't Christian will go to Hell... they need to think about their own salvation rather than everybody else's. So, basically shut up and live a positive life rather than judging everybody else.
