I step into the voting booth tomorrow with these people and more in mind, thankful for those who paved the way before us and wishing they were still here, hopefully celebrating the results.

57. yep. here's one of my favorite quotes:
"It's just a ride and we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money, a choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one."

31. Yep,
When the good people of MO were presented with the choice of Ashcroft and the deceased Carnahan, they answered in one voice "we're going with the corpse".

I once worked with a guy who voted for Carnahan in that election. He said it was strange yet sensible at the same time.

60. There Was More To Mel Than That
Mel really was a good guy, and he could have really done big things had he lived. It's almost a shame that he'll be forever linked to Ashcroft when he deserves to be remembered in his own right. He won not simply because Ashcroft was so bad, but because Carnahan was that good.

I remember telling some workers where I shopped why I was planning to vote for Carnahan for governer. They agreed that it was important to vote Dem, and Mel sounded like the real deal. I remember after he won, and he kept his campaign promises, those same workers being excited that they had voted for him. These weren't political junkies, or even die-hard Dems - just pissed-off workers - and he managed to get these tired, hard-working people interested and involved just by doing what he said he would. I still miss him.

64. Mo is my all-time hero in American politics.....I was a college junior
when he was running in 1975/76 and I was heartsick as the more moderate (and less talented) Jimmy Carter beat him out by one or two percent in primary after primary. I almost refused to vote for Carter in the general election (would have gone to Gene McCarthy, the liberal independent) but I backed out at the last minute.

I've voted Democratic ever since, so tomorrow's vote will be for Mo Udall and my other Democratic heroes, Barbara Jordan and Ann Richards.

With more like him, the Vietnam War would never have become the mess that it did.

I'm also going to honor all the Senate and House Dems who voted AGAINST the Iraq War resolution. They're the only ones who weren't too naively trusting or too chicken-hearted or too compromised to do the right thing.

He died in a mysterious plane crash (plane engine may have been sabotaged) the night he won the U.S. Senate nomination from Missouri. Many in Missouri were/are convinced he would have eventually become President. His command of issues and mastery of the town hall format was incredible. He was a bright star in a dark time.

I think of Congressman Litton every election cycle. What might have been?

69. Not eligible to vote,
but saw that none has mentioned Rosa Parks - one strong woman daring to be defiant.

My class is learning about African-American history, so tho' we're all white Norwegians, we'd like to add Reverend Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois, Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass.

85. My Father, WWII, Korea Vet
Spent his life serving his country. West Point, class of 1941, Africa 1942, Sicily, Italy, 1943, France, Germany 1944 - 1945. Saw Dachau firsthand. Army of occupation 1946. Korea, 1952 - 1953. Korea, Army of occupation 1954 - 1955.

Knew all along what he was fighting for -- Democracy, the Constitution, Freedom. Eventually despised the Vietnam war and the waste of "good young patriotic American lives being wasted". Nixon was the last Republican he ever voted for in 1960 (NOT 68 or 72). He says he regretted that 1960 vote. A strong supporter of the (then) liberal Supreme Court and individual rights -- "that's what I fought for".

87. My mom.
Never missed an election - even the school board, etc. special elections. One of my earliest memories is going into the booth with her. She was a child of the Jim Crow era South, and she never took for granted her right to vote. Hopefully she will watch us from Heaven taking our country back.

Evers, Aaron Henry, Robert F. Kennedy and FDR among many others. And of course the three you mentioned. Paul Wellstone and Ann Rchards are the two most inspiring Democrats of this generation for me.
