Oh come on, Oprah!
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 05:13 PM by DesertRat
Oprah is the most powerful woman in the country and what is her topic the day before this important election? She has on Kirstie Ally in a bikini talking about her weight loss and about how to shop for the perfect bikini.
:argh:

1. The show might air on different days in different markets...plus, she is no fool
She's not gonna get Dixie Chicked...not Oprah. Better safe than sorry, I think she's thinking.

5. I don't think that she should make a political statement
But she could have on some Gold Star Moms or a panel of women discussing the issues.
BTW, I found out about Kirstie being on in a bikini when I read it on the front page of CNN.com.

35. She made a political statement
two years ago during the CA Gubanatorial recall when she featured Ahnie and his doormat wife for a solid hour and did not have Gray Davis on for equal time. I lost all respect for her on that day.

2. With all the stress we have to deal with, a little fluff is a good thing...
...I don't mind a little distraction from politics. And come on, Kristy has been through a lot herself; it's wonderful she's lost the weight. :)

What about the rest of Oprah's audience? She could influence millions of people.

10. Oprah won't alienate half her audience by being "partisan"
She's a brand name..a company icon..

I fault her for not getting on the election fiasco. She has the power to actually make things happen, and she just dips her toe in a little every now and then and then does another "makeover" show..

shame on Oprah..

on the other hand, no one forces people to watch her shows or buy her magazine, so I guess she can do whatever she wants :)

the really shameful thing is that since we have no leadership where it should be, we keep hoping and praying that someone..anyone.. will step in to fill the void..and then we get our feelings hurt when they don't

18. Hell even Martha Stewart slammed bushit
On her new show...I believe she made a remark about perhaps his parents SHOULD HAVE spanked him and then raised an eyebrow lol

I don't expect Oprah to become an activist but I will never forgive that platform she gave *it* on her program in 2000.

19. The REASON Martha was prosecuted so vigorously
was because she was very anti-Bush (even had a big fundraiser scheduled the week she was charged) BEFORE she went to the slammer.

and of course HER Daddy was not in charge of appointing the people who would scrutinize her stick dealings (like junior's was)

23. Yes, I knew that!
I have also made it a point to buy her cookbooks and magazines SINCE they went after her and I learned more about her.

The plus for me was that I enjoy her books and products which I would never have sought out if the repukes hadn't nailed her...until they went after her I wasn't all that interested and assumed she was like some sort of June Cleaver type lol

27. I especially like her when she's with Dave Letterman
She could have written him off since he made scathing jokes about her when she was locked up, but she's a bigger person than that,.. she just keeps coming back and gently scolds him.. but you can tell they are pals

3. Oprah's never made a political statement in her life.
Her agenda has never been antiracism or feminism. Oprah just wants upper-middle class housewives to go on and on about "sass" and "attitude" and "You go, girl", and then buy stuff from her.

No surprise here.

6. i don't think that's true. i kinda remember she did a show with a group
of women in the run up to the 2004 election, discussing abortion, and how horrible it would be if women lost the freedom to decide for themselves.

it surprised me that she did that--but why doesn't she do it again??? (only talk about the war, the environment, the shrinking middle class, etc.)

11. Even if she FITS into a bikini, she's a bit past her prime
to actually do it.. Oprah's not on here until later, but I think Kirstie could have gotten her message across with a cute spandex top and some slimcut slacks :)

12. Oprah is all about the MONEY
She is not a voice of the socially or politically aware. I find it amusing that others think differently.

She is an entertainer, end of story.

17. she donates to Democrats
She supports Democratic causes and helps poor people. Those are Democratic values and I'm sure her viewers are taking note.

Besides, O'Reilly's little visit cost Republicans millions of votes. I'm sure of it.

21. Oh my!
She does look better than before, and probably feels a lot better too, but as a woman her age (or near enough) I would prefer a nice clingy top and some snug fitting slacks.. that's a lot of 50+ year old skin to be showing :)

14. I realized after the ugly O'Lielly show Oprah did a week or so ago
that Oprah does not and will NEVER walk the talk. She might idolize Martin Luther King but she is not willing to go the distance that he and others did in the 60s.

Probably half of her audience are well off rethugs who envy and worship Oprah for her wealth, NOT her ideals. Oprah doesn't want to lose that audience, because then a large portion of her well dressed audience is out the door and she will be dealing with the rest of us who don't wear Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choos or Donna Karan but clothes from the Gap,Target or the Thrift Store.

Maybe someday Oprah's conscience will kick in but it's doubtful. She likes her mega rich and powerful lifestyle way to much to put it on the line. :eyes:

25. I believe Martin Luther King would be very proud of her
The end of his life was focused on world wide poverty. That is where her focus is right now.

Oprah was a speaker at an event actually endorsed a Democrat for President(not Obama). I tried to call into Randi's show on a day she was talking about Oprah and wondering about her political affiliation. I also posted the information on some forums but no one wanted to hear it.

Oprah doesn't really need her audience, she would be just fine if her show was cancelled today.

I'm glad she's not directly involved in politics. She probably wouldn't be able to do as much. People are so fickle that they will turn on her if she makes one misstatement.

I'd rather she concentrate in the humanitarian area.

32. We all know that Oprah has done tremendous things to help people.
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 07:15 PM by TheGoldenRule
But what's happening to this country right now should NOT keep the rich and powerful silent. No one has the influence Oprah has but she won't use it the way it needs to be used right now. The time to use it is NOW.

Do you want to see Nazi Germany repeated? Because the direction this country is headed echoes Nazi Germany. Maybe you aren't aware of the some of the things that the GOP controlled government has passed recently like the torture bill or posse comitatus which gives * the ability to declare Martial Law. Wake up!

That Oprah has the means to help expose what's going on and to maybe help to stop it and that she doesn't, is just pathetic. Oprah can and should do better than that! For Shame Oprah!

31. Oprah is all about none other than...
Oprah.

She has an enormous ego. I think she does some decent things like with Africa, but I simply can't stand her. Even though I question her sincerity, I don't think it matters. I think it's good she does give back what she does (like to Rwanadans, Sudanese, etc).

She has the sense to support Obama though. She's not completely brain dead though.

34. She also had on her show a woman who is taking care of 10 children, 3 of which
are her own and her elderly mother. And two sisters who were survivors of the genocide in Rwanda. She reunited the sisters with their family after 12 years and bought a house for the woman who was taking care of her extended family.
