111. I agree with the analysis above, and I'm suspicious about Virginia Senate race.
It'd take a lot of nerve to flip the old Diebold switch enough to keep control of the House.

However, I'm feeling uneasy about the VA race, as the exit poll results were changed hours after the polls closed.

I sent this email by web to CNN.com:

"Hours after the polls closed, your exit poll results for VA Senate race changed.

Webb did have 56% among women, and an overall lead based on the distribution.

ie 51% multiplied by 56 + 49% multiplied by what his percentage for males was gave a total of about 51% for Webb.

How is it possible for exit polls to change hours after the polls closed?

I'm remembering how the exit polls all flipped, or was it the final results that flipped suddenly in 04 courtesy of Diebold, Ken Blackwell, etc?'

As I understand it, the law just says if the vote is within X% then the state must pay for a recount if the loser asks for it. Above that margin then the challenger of the results foots the bill.(I wonder if they get their money back if they win, ala the NFL contested call rule)

I'm much more disappointed in the Allen supporters for being so blindly partisan. This is about America.

I'd also suggest focusing your anger on our electronic voting system and it's imperfections. Since you're up for a recount, that's what's going to matter now.

Peace.

Only because of the higher vote turnout and the fact that usually there are not enough voting machines to handle the volume.

And traditionally it's the urban areas that support democrats. It was St. Louis that gave the win to Carnahan back in 2000.

Webb declares victory in close Senate race

11/08/2006

By BOB LEWIS / Associated Press

Democrat Jim Webb proclaimed victory early Wednesday over Republican Sen. George Allen in a Virginia race that could determine which party controls the Senate, even though a recount is certain.

"The votes are in and we won," Webb told a crowd of jubilant supporters at a northern Virginia hotel ballroom after 1 a.m.

"This is a great moment for all of us who believe in an inclusive society," he said. "I will look forward to representing all of you to the best of my ability."

Webb spoke as returns showed his lead as only 2,700 votes over Allen with only eight precincts yet uncounted. Webb claimed that those few remaining votes should break in his favor.

Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 03:04 AM by progree
So where are we?

My count is that there are only 2 significant races left: Montana and Virginia.
If Dems lose both its 51 Rep, 49 Dem
If Dems win one its 50 Rep, 50 Dem (effectively a Repug Senate)
If Dems win both its 49 Rep, 51 Dem

(Dem count includes the Independent Connecticut Liebermann (sigh) and Vermont Bernie Sandars (yeah))

My understanding is Virginia is slightly ahead for Dems (Webb) and will require a recount probably
I haven't seen Montana except it was ahead for Dem
Do I understand this right? THanks

It's the official site of the Montana Secretary of State. I watched the numbers change between 3 and 3:30 AM. But, I thought I'd cut them some slack. They're a small state and it's really late. They can make a mistake if they correct it quickly. Still, if something odd turns up later, we have a bit of a record.

Peace.

As of 801a ET

In Montana, Testor's lead went from 3,997 (354a) down to 3,293 (412a) ET, and back up to 5,277 (502a) and down to 2,052 (605a) and down further to 1,743 (658a), and down some more to 1,507 (752a) and is now (752a) a 0.40% lead with 96% of precincts reporting. RECOUNT? Will have to count absentee ballots and provisional ballots?

In Virginia, Webb's lead went from 7,999 (355a) to 7,847 (400a) ET, and is now a 0.33% lead with 99% of precicnts reporting.

No update to above re: Virginia on CNN site as of 801a ET. I suppose besides a recount, there will be a significant number of absentee and provisional ballots to be counted for the first time.

220. Democrats did not win the Senate if you count independents on the Dems side.
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 10:13 AM by oc2002
At best the Senate has been divided evenly, and the Republicans still have members that vote more lock and step then the Democratic senators do. However you could say the Republicans clearly lost the senate.

So, unless I missed something, nobody controls the senate now.

Nobody has won the senate yet. But either party can win it.

230. I was annoyed by Schumer, today, when he seemed to be calling for...
... Allen to concede, and implying that accurate counting of the votes could be preempted.

Count all the m-f'ing votes, Chuck! We're supposed to be better than them.

244. Persecuted Christians
These are people who despite having the House, the Senate, the White House, and a healthy chunk of the Supreme Court and the military can delude themselves into believing that those who fit their definition of Christian are persecuted in this country. Now they will be even more convinced of it. They're not well people.
